Hi There,
I'm hoping that someone can give me some pointers on this one.
A couple of times a week we are unable to connect to our WIFI, on the IPad/IPhone/IPod we get a message: "unable to join the network", while on the Mac we gets a message: "A connection timeout occurred". The network is there, we can see it but we can't join it. This can go on for a few seconds, minutes or even hours and then suddenly it rights itself and all is OK again.
If I connect to the router using a network cable I can use the internet without any issue. I've had Swisscom on to it and we've done all the usual stuff - restarted the router, changed the channel and so on with no luck. As far as they can see all is well.
It is happening right now and using the iStumbler tool, I can see a few other networks, but all are on different channels and frequencies. And our own network is showing the highest signal 76% -> 20%, so I don't think there is any conflict...
I'm really at a loss as to how to move forward on this one. Any suggestions?
Jim.
PS - Router was supplied by Swisscom and is a Motorola Netopia Router, if that matters
You may try resetting the device - either log into it and choose this option, or, using a pen/pencil, press and hold the reset button, power off and on while holding the reset button and keep it pressed for about 30s.
The modem will then re-load its config from the network.
If it doesn't help then ask for replacing it.
I think nearby channels can still confuse it. Try changing the wireless channel either to "auto" or picking a very low or high number.
Hi there,
Thanks for the tip, but we've done that a few times already, it might run a few days and then it happens again - Swisscom checked and replaced the modem and again the same story, great for a few days until it happened again.
I'm really stumped on this on! I'm beginning to think that Swisscom will have to send out someone.
Jim.
Thanks, but the channels are well spread out: 1, 6 & 11 and there is plenty of digits between the frequencies as well. No matter where I turn it all seems tip top, only it is not!
Tomorrow I'm going to go round the neighbor's houses to see if anyone has similar problems....
Jim.
Maybe a DHCP issue?
Oh, wait, nevermind, can't be that. Sounds like a flakey router, ask Swisscom for a new one. If you take it to a nearby shop, they can probably do it there for you. Or call their customer service and ask them to send you a new one. Swisscom has great customer service.
Ya, Swisscom are convinced the router is good and want to send a guy out instead... what is not clear is who pays
I've now set up a new network using an Apple Time Capsule and bridged it with the Swisscom router or internet access and guess what, the Swisscom WiFi has not gone down since... I've been waiting for it to happen all day to see if the new one stays up, but not a movement on it
could be wifi router overheating. is it somewhere cool with good airflow?
Yes it is cool to the touch and I even moved it on to it's own little table with nothing around it...
Mean while the users, otherwise known as the family, are putting a lot of pressure on tech support, otherwise known as dad
Maybe you have solved it I was about to suggest something along these lines. At one point had a similiar intermitent failure of a wireless router and only on the wireless connections which when I replaced the router was resolved.
I think if swisscom come to visit they will charge you.
That is a good point about the router - will Swisscom send you a new one to try? Or have you already tried that?
I expect they will, but they are unable to give me any indication of how much...
They sent me a one on one replacement for the Motorola and it did no good.
But I was wondering if I ordered a "Centro grande Analog Standard" from them, could I just swap out the old one and swap in the new one, or is there some configuration needed on either side (Swisscom or me)?
We have a similar problem - but with a Cable-Com modem and a Netgear Wi-fi router.
Occasionally an iPOD Touch or MacBook won't connect until the router is reset.
I once had a quick look for solutions and it appears it may be a Mac s/w issue but I didn't get any further as it wasn't that interesting.
