Wine club/supplier recommendations?

Can anyone recommend a wine supplier or club that is the equivalent of 'The Wine Society' / 'Laithwaites'. I am looking for a club or the swiss equivalent which picks a selection of wines for its members, taking the 'plonk' risk out of buying? All leads welcome.

Thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with the wine society, but this is a nice organization from Switzerland - they concentrate solely on organic wines - mostly from Spain, Italy, France, CH...Nice sample packets each month... Delinat

I taste everything I buy. Pop down to the nearest Mövenpick Wein shop where they have tastings every Saturday. Go to the local Messe where they have many wine stands.

Thanks for reminding me that I have gotta go and collect my 2006 Bordeaux today

Try http://www.bacchuswines.ch/ . I remember visiting them in Basel. Seemed like a fun lot and good value!

Thanks I'll try those

Bacchus looks like they're attention is else where, I'll monitor their site in case they find a business partner to carry on the tastings etc. If you come across anything similar, I'd be really grateful. I have acquired a taste for Swiss produced wines and want to broaden my knowledge in this area.

Although it might sound strange, Denner is a good option... You can try the wine at Dvino (a chain of wine bars owned by Denner), and then get the bottles at the supermarket. Denner normaly is associated with cheap and low quality stuff, but you can actually get very good wine in there without having to pay obscene amount of money for it.

Good point...and don't forget Denner belongs to the Migros group - as does Globus, which is perhaps the reason there is a decent selection at Denner.

The chap that runs Denner is into his wine. Check out their wine book next time you are in a store. They have some very expensive ones too. Surprising when you look at most of what is on offer in store. I recommend their champagne too. Better than Moet at half the price.

It might be a bit to far away for you and maybe not eactly what you are looking for, but in Basel there is a vey good wine/spirits shop, Paul Ullrich. They have some courses and also some tastings from time to time. They quite often have wines that you can taste before purchasing it.

We have been subscribed to the club les domaines for several years and always enjoy the quality and variety of their packets. Lots of unknown wines from relatively small producers (invariably European).

Zweifel wines (shops in Zürich-Höngg, -Enge, Kloten, Aarau and St.Gallen) has a good website with a nice search option to find wines per country & region.

What is not on their website however is that there's a small Zweifel Wine Outlet in the Rümlang shopping center - worth going there.

Bought some really nice Primitivo and Negroamaro (from south of Italy). They offer in total about 25 different wines.

They have 2 or 3 Chianti's, a few wines from Australia, New Zealand, California, Spain, Italy.

Indeed - Denner also has an excellent wine collection - I once saw a box of wine for CHF 2'000 casually sold opposite the washing up liquids, etc .

I'd recomment having a look at:

www.cavino.ch

We get all our wine from him, nice man. You can email him in English, no problem. Anyway he handpicks his wines -- Swiss, French, Italian, Spanish. He makes trips to vineyards to find the right suppliers. You can order online and he'll ship to you. Larger orders can be delivered. (BTW - he has nice olive oil too)

Cheers!

Could you please recommend a particular wine/brand from Denner. I do not drink wine so know nothing about it. However need to buy a good one for a friend..

Do such clubs exist in Switzerland? I'm thinking of Swiss based mail order wine suppliers, usually in cases of 12 bottles at a competitive price.

They are very popular in the UK, especially for low priced wines often imported from the likes of Chile or Argentina.

I have never seen any adverts in Swiss papers of such 'clubs' but perhaps others know better!

If you used the search feature in this forum, then you would have found this post: wine club/supplier recommendations

Wine clubs exist, but generally use telemarketing to get customers.

Did you even try to use Google?

I'm not sure whether this is a reprimand to a 70 year old for not being on the ball or just a terse reply. My answer is that I did use the search facility but I included direct mail as my main description because I was not interested in Wine Clubs which were other than Direct Mail houses. I got zero response.

I very much hope when you reach my age you will get kinder, more courteous responses to any enquiries you may make.

Meanwhile I will continue to post; I have found the vast majority of members very tolerant and helpful.

It's not a club but Mövenpick sends a printed catalogue to its subscribers quite often (monthly?). You can order by mail and have your purchase delivered by post. They usually cater for the medium and high price market but occasionally they have a good find in the low price segment. You can order the catalogue and various email newsletters here if you know some German.

The site, best I can tell, use cookies to choose the language. That means that there is no URL that will get you the French version. If you get the German version look for the "Français" button at the end of the line below the graphic and click on it.

Switzerland is certainly not really a quadrlingual country, but it sure as hell is not monolingual Folks, PLEASE give references to French language versions when available!
