Winter Tires/Tyres 2025/2026 version

Yet another oft-repeated topic.

WRS today (Monday 29 Sep) will be taping an interview with a TCS spokesperson about winter tyres. They are accepting questions from the audience (this morning) if you have any. Send them to studio(at)worldradio(dot)ch or WhatsApp: [022 575 30 10].

Interview will be played sometime later this week and should be available on their website after that. I’ll try and link both.

Edited to add:
Mark is saying they did this about 6 years ago and the interview was their most accessed clip of all time. People would listen or downloaded it, even years later.

An update is necessary as EVs, which are heavier than ICE, need special consideration and improvements in technology, etc.

All year tires will definitely be discussed.

The interview is set to be played Friday morning between 9h00 and 9h30.

It will be posted to their website from 9h30.

You can stream from www.worldradio.ch or listen on DAB+ in GE, VD and VS.

Edited to correct time.

Michelin has kind of changed the game on all season tires with the latest CrossClimate stuff. I tried a couple of years back for about a month or so (replacement car for a long repair) with quite a bit of snowy days and was impressed with their performance. Tires changes on wheels are quite expensive and they add up, and second set of wheels is not always practical. Next tire change (probably next winter) for the family car gets the latest generation of these tires for sure.

good to know. will have to research how many kms these tyres last. i know large part of the US uses all weather radials … it was only in CH/EU that i learnt about summer/winter tyres …

A review from Jalopnik How The Michelin CrossClimate 3 Compares To Other All-Weather Tires, According To Tyre Reviews

Michelin claims the Crossclimat 3 will last 100K miles.

The Hankook Kinergy XP is also recommended. Supposed to cost less and perform almost as well,

Did the reviewer say that he liked the freebie tyres which Michelin sent him?

I’d be less dubious if the Title had been something less biased.

An enormous amount of “reviews” on the web are completely biased due to handouts - either financial or through freebies.

A British surgeon, who has a podcast where he interviews scientists and medical experts on various topics said he was recently offered a six figure sum to promote a supplement company. It was more than he made in a year as a surgeon.
He said no.

Here’s the original Tyre Review review which as well as mentioning the tyres in the "review* above, compares them with winter and summer tyres, which, in my opinion (and especially with the winter tyre comparsion), is a more useful guide in helping people decide which tyre to buy:

The guy on Tyre Reviews is quite ok, and he includes some objective metrics in his comparison tests, and his results actually track with other tests ran by magazines or other outlets.

Michelin is probably the best tire manufacturer in the world overall, they have vast R&D budgets, and they consistently offer top products in their respective categories (at least in the passenger cars segment that we care about) in the last 10 years or so. I’m not saying they’re not spending a lot on marketing, which today means influencers, but they really do have some good rubber to sell.

And CrossClimate 2 & 3, I’ve never read a single bad thing, or head a single bad thing by anyone - and I’ve seen them myself perform quite well, so it looks like a great step forward for all seasons, on which I was starkly against for years…

My dad always impressed on me never to skimp on tyres. “Get the best set you can afford, it’s the only thing that’s in contact with the road!”

They try and market their products everywhere - I’ve even heard that they advertise on plaques at the entrances to fancy restaurants.

Marketing free independent comparison site. Here you go.

Safety first! (Restaurant recommendations are non-existent, though)

Nothing beats Goodyear!

Wait a min…vehicles made for at land speed records in salt flats don’t have rubber tires. If I remember well, rubber tires are limited to 500-600 kmh. Then, they explode before setting any record.

Also, not a single road legal vehicle in there. Goodyear, the best (vicarious) tires in the world.

American company with better European competition - never.

So how much of a sucker am I for paying 140 CHF to change tires?

I don’t remember exactly, like 80-90 CHF every 6 monts, including storage of the wheels and refill of windscreen washer fluid. But, a reservation like 6-8 weeks in advance is required.

Maybe showing up and telling “I want it now” has another price.

It also depends on if it’s changing the rims or changing the tyres on the same rims.
It’s expensive to do the latter.

If time is money then not much.

I know someone who says they don’t have time to do it themselves but then drives an hour to their “chosen” garage to get them changed, and an hour back.
Including the time to make the appointment, waiting for the wheels to be tyres/wheels to be changed and so on, it’s probably four hours out of day.

I do mine myself. Fifteen minutes tops.

I’ve even changed them back a week later after deciding to go for an impromptu trip to the mountains.

My trolley jack is about 25 years old and still going strong!

That’s about what we pay. It’s mainly the storage that’s important. A set of wheels takes up so much space, plus they give them a power wash. No windscreen washer fluid, though. They give me a coffee while I wait and when my son was small they used to let him raise and lower the car on the hydraulic lift - that was worth an afternoon’s entertainment…

They charge me like 20 francs per wheel to wash them. I usually go first to the car wash, clean them with cleaning fluid and a rag. Then drive to the garage.

I like to see the car underside more than pushing buttons. I can spend hours looking at the suspension links, visualizing how a bar pushes other bar, restrained by other bar, small bolts, big bolts…it’s worth a day’s entertainment

So y’all got a spare set of rims as well? I don’t know many people who can refit tyres on rims by their own.

The 140 twice a year is expensive but worth it to me because I can walk back home and not waste an hour or so waiting for them.
