Winterthur Hegi Neighbourhood: Opinions?

We are looking for areas to move around Zurich and found a construction project in Hegi, Winterthur.

Does anybody have an idea about how good a neighborhood is that?

It's been a lot better since they fixed the shrimp problem. Can you imagine having to drink bottled water in Switzerland in the 21st century?!

I've also heard that there are plans to close the carcass rendering plant, so it's obviously getting better all the time.

This part of Winterthur has been in the news recently because of the closure of a seemingly rather radical mosque and it's imam.

Ohh boy. It was not that bad. Considering they had to drain Winterthur Lake, it is really a shame. With all the beaches and mooring places gone Wintherthur just as no longer the same vibe and feel.

They managed to strike a deal with Loki. His beer mug factory was turned into something nice as well. I am confident that the will find a similar solution with Huitzilopochtli, or Hegi as we call him, and his carcass rendering plant.

LOL, folks.

However, I spent 10-12 hours there almost daily for 12 years - it was a lovely area.

Now they can't stop building huge henhouse-like apartment buildings, covering every green spot there was (there were acres of that) and it is becoming rather ugly (personal opinion).

I thought about buying a loft there once - I wouldn't see 10 meters from it by now but everybody else would know everything about my life

Not sure what you want to know? There is a Migros, there is a Coop. Mediamarkt is moving away apparently, an Aldi not far and a Lidl even closer, an Obi ..... they even have their own trainstation now. I'm sure they adapted the school to it's new needs.

hth.

I want to know what is that neighborhood known for? A goid area? A bad one? Average? Noisy? Dirty? Calm? Terrible schools? No childcare?

LOL, you won't get these kind of assertions from me.

Plus I see the good sides in anything.

How good a person are you? How calm? Would they even want you to move there?

Good point :-/

Are you talking about renting or buying? Given that you come from Vaud/Geneva you will find many things work very differently near Zurich. You will have to get used to a new language for a start. So in short: you may not like it. Hence I would never consider buying from the start. Look for a rental place and try to settle in. Get to know the area and then, if after a few years you are sure you will want to stay, buy then.

If both you and your wife work in Zurich I personally would not live in Winterthur because your commute will be very long. I live in Thalwil and work in Winterthur so I know what I am talking about. Try something closer to Zurich. As someone else has sugested in your other thread. Look at Adliswil for example.

Also if you were given your C by now, you will pay a lot for taxes in Winterthur. If you are still on a B it's less a Problem but it will be one once you get a C.

It's Wintherthur.

Hegi is part of the Oberwintherthur Quartier.

It has the old village Hegi proper, some newer buildings around it at Hegi-Gern and Hegifeld, and the newest developments near Eulachpark Neuhegi. Further out you will have industrial area.

For statistics reason Hegifeld is part of Hegmatten, Neuhegi part of Grüze.

Many of those areas have speedlimit of 30.

Wintherthur is know for its many trees along the roads. Hegi and is surrounding has comparable fewer trees.

Schools are Hegi-Dorf, Hegifeld, Eulachpark, and the new Neu-Heggi which will open this summer. They all belong to the Oberwintherthur school district.

There are no big churches in Hegi. The clostesed Roman Chatholic Church is St. Marien, the clostest protestens St. Arbogast near Oberwintherthur Trainstation.

The area is served by bus lines 14 and 680 as well as night bus N61. Clostest Train stations are Oberwintherthur (Bus 680) and Wintherthur-Hegi (Bus 14).

Nearest Autobahn access ist Oberwintherthur.

Shopping wise it looks like you have the Coop and Migros at Rümiker-/Stäffelistrasse. No independent Backery or Butcher.

Nearest public pool is Badi Niederwies in Elsau reachable by bus 680 and bicycle.

Conclusion: A rather boring and quiet place.

What tax? Isn't cantonal tax the same in all ZH and communal applicable only to high-enough salaries?

How much different is Winterthur communal tax from the rest of ZH?

Many thanks for the comments, by the way.

Once you are on a C permit you will be liable for normal taxation which is based on the Gemeinde Steuerfuss, not Quellensteuer which is based on a cantonal average.

How much of a change this will be for you depends on where you live, what your income is, possible deductions, etc. Some people end up paying less on normal taxation, some more.

For a quick and dirty look at different tax outcomes, use the Comparis calculator, plug in your actual numbers, select the 'all Gemeinden in the canton' option:
