wisdom teeth

I have a wisdom tooth that's starting to really bug me, it's scraping agaisnt the side of the cheek and when chewing on that side I puncture the gum below sometimes as it's really close. It's the upper wisdom tooth.

Does anyone know how much this will cost to get pulled? There's no cavity nor infection as of yet.

Or is there a dentist here that'll let me pay off the bill by coming by the office to clean or something as in still in my studies and really don't have the cash for this, but at the same time it's starting to drive me insane everytime I eat and get a copper taste added to my meal.

If it's only causing that sort of thing, it's really not worth the hassle of getting it pulled. In the best case scenario it'll be bloody painful for a while - in the worst case... well, I know people whose jaws have never properly recovered.

I imagine most dentists would suggest wearing a toothguard of some sort to prevent this irritation, rather than removing a perfectly good tooth.

Thanks for the input, should mention though that this one (unlike the rest of my teeth which are 100 percent straight) is coming in at a 45 degreen angle heading into the cheek and part of the pointed part of the Molar is pointing right down to my bottom gum (when my mouth is closed I can feel it slightly pushing into to lower gum.)

I also had a similar issue with my lower wisdom tooth. It came in at a strange angle and caused me a lot of bother.

It really persisted for around 6 months and I remember choosing not to chew food on that side of my mouth.

It did however, eventually sort itself out.

I would advise on enduring the discomfort. It does not last forever.

From what I have heard the procedure to remove wisdom teeth leaves you with a very painful wound and indeed in Switzerland - a very large dentist bill!!

got the same issue but my dentist advised not to pull it unless it is strictly necessary, as I am older than 25.

There are many nerves passing by that area and if the wisdom tooth is too close to one of them you might end damaging it and have your tong or your chin numb for the rest of your life.

Use some good mouthwash, like the one you find in a pharmacy and not in the supermarket, and use it for 4 or 5 times a day, you will see the benefits in 2 or 3 days.

I'll give it a go, but is this meant to straighten the tooth? I'm 21 at the moment so at the normal age to have 'em pulled. Don't get me wrong, I'm not keen on pulling it and I was rather happy that I was able to keep the two on the other side and that they are in order. This one was fine until about 3 weeks ago where it seemed to have put on a growth spurt and now I'm finding I have a bloody meal if it's not soup or really soft as anything hard that gets between the tooth and gum just rips it up like a hungry carnivour going after a pig.

You didn't mention that it wasn't straight, nor that (and I now infer this) it's just coming through. If it's coming up on its own accord then the previous advice applies, but if it's impacted, i.e. pushing into another tooth, then removal may indeed be indicated. I'd go see a dentist anyway to get an opinion.

Around 400.

Tom

Probably best, yes

But I mentioned it in the reply to your first post. It's not pushing into another tooth but out towards the cheek. I guess I should get a picture up.

Get a trip to India ... You will have vacation + the wisdom thing sorted out well ... I know people who do this .. its called medical tourism for that matter ...

hello, i cant help with the costings in swiss but i had 4 wisdom teeth removed, in one operation, in the uk.

they grew in at an angle as well, i was constantly biting into my cheeks!

also as i left it so long, i kept getting infections, tonsillitis, the teeth were rotting...

best thing ever getting them removed.

the wounds healed perfectly and i didnt have any bruising.

prior to the op, the doctor did mention (re the bottom two teeth) about the possibility of nerve damage, but i think it is so very rare and unfortunate if this happens.

considering i paid a small fortune for a filling over here, i can imagine you would want to wait it out and see if you can bear it!

good luck and lots of cloves as my mother would say

Indians and their beautiful teeth; inherited their dentistry skills from us pearly-white Brits. I'd suggest if wanting to skip Swiss prices you find somewhere a bit closer. Hopping over to Mumbai each time you need a follow-up visit is gonna cost. Tasty food though.

Oh, you poor thing. I would get it out - I hope it's an easy one.

Not sure if this is an option, but if you're in England... I had troublesome wisdom teeth which were driving me nuts. A private clinic took the easy one out immediately for 50 pounds and I went straight back to work much relieved. The other three were really tough ones, the private place wouldn't touch them (too much risk) and I had them done on the NHS... free but a 3-month wait for general anaesthetic and getting my jaw chiselled into, over a week recovery time.

So - may be worth popping over the border to Germany, France or Italy. Also, don't do what I did and get panicky when it still ached a bit, and go back (another 50 quid!) for them to tell me 'it's fine, healing nicely...'

I just got all four of mine out in the chair at Swiss smile.

It cost 1490.- for all hour although one of the teeth was difficult (which costs more) It's normally around 350-400 Fr. each... I have heard Swiss smile is the most expensive though.

As for getting any money from your healthcare i spoke to the dentist about it and he said it is only possible if your tooth is growing across (into the other teeth) or you have a cyst there.

Although it was expensive i have to say i cannot complain about one thing with Swiss smile....I had all four out and once while i was awake and they were very gentle and nice. I was a little sore after but nothing really painful....the next day i went to help a friend move some furniture....i could eat properly after 4 days.

I hope that helps!

I don't think it's possible to estimate the cost without a dentist taking xrays at the very least. Some wisdom teeth can just be pulled, end of story. (I had one removed the day before I got married. No problems the next day.) But others can have root problems that require cutting and stitching, so could cost a lot more than a basic painkilling injection and a quick tug.

I suggest the OP gets an estimate, or preferably a quote, from a dentist.

Upper wisdom teeth very often are angled towards the cheek while erupting through the gums, and that can cause the troubles the OP is having. In most cases, the tooth turns downwards during the last phase of eruption, but the sore cheek can be pretty cumbersome.

My advice as an oral surgeon with a lot of maxillofacial surgery background: Get an ointment at the pharmacy, one that sticks to the mucous mebranes after application and releases its active ingredients in the course of several hours. It's called a dental adhesive ointment and, of course, it has nothing to do with a denture adhesive.

My suggestion is Solcoseryl. It's a tiny tube, only 5 grams, and costs about ten franks. Quite expensive, you'll say, but you just apply a quantity about as small as a coffee bean, so it lasts a long time.

Don't even try to rub it into the mucous membrane. The mucus layer prevents that. Just smear it onto the sore area with a swift movement of your finger tip and let it sit there. It will form a slimy layer that sort of sticks to the surface.

Do that three or four times a day. It will sooth the pain and assist healing. If that doesn't significantly help within, say, four or five days, see a dentist. If it helps, wait and see. If it occurs again, do the same procedure again. If you have to say, "What's 'nuff is 'nuff," see the dentist.

Pulling an upper wisdom tooth without complications costs you about 140 franks, basic examination included. If an x-ray picture is necessary, that will cost you another 20 franks or so, and if more than one injection is needed, that will be yet another 40 franks.

Wisdom tooth extractions can become more expensive when more surgery is involved, which is rare with upper wisdom teeth and even much rarer when they are already partly or fully erupted.

In my opinion, way too many wisdom teeth get extracted without real necessity, sometimes with the simple explanation, "It's a wisdom tooth, so let's remove it." Especially in the USA that seems to be a very wide spread philosophy; it's somewhat better in Switzerland. In most cases, Mother Nature sooner or later will take care of the problem.

Sorry cant help, but, thanks so much .. for months i have been thinking i was the only one with a weird tooth. Now i know.. my dentist said supernumerary.. had he said wisdom i may have put two n two together.I also need to do something but not sure what. Thanks again.

Had a nasty one taken out yesterday that needed a surgeon to remove 711 francs.

get it done in Germany. I had one of mine removed and it cost 1250 Fr. Needed stitches (as is often the case), hurt like shit, took 35 minutes.

Anyway - just had a tonsillectomy on Monday - compared to that, getting the wisdom teeth removed was a walk in the park. You know you're in deep shit pain-wise once morphine stops working.

Poor Arthur! All this talk about wisdom teeth stories reminds me of childbirth stories!

Go to a qualified Swiss dentist, take a xray and get informed! It is the only way to take a good decision! You will be glad, at 80, when you take time for your teeth now.
