Woodworking

Is anyone here into woodworking? I would not mind taking it up as a hobby and was thinking of renting a small space/studio to share with someone who is also an aspiring carpenter.

have you had any luck with this? I spend most of my weekends as an amateur carpenter where I currently live in the UK but am moving in March/April to Bern and am trying to figure out the best way to prepare in terms of housing, i.e., having a basement in a single house.

thanks,

mike

Nope, no luck. I live in an apartment so that's out. Found a workshop for rent but it is quite sizeable and runs at least chf700 a month. So that's out too. You need several people to share it or find a farmer who will let you use a shed or someting.

You could do it in your basement but noise could become a problem with neighbors.

Very frustrating. There has got to be something where people can come and pursue whatever noisy, dusty hobbies they want but i have not found it.

Speak to your Gemeinde - see if you can persuade them to provide a suitable room free of charge; call it a carpentry club. Where I live that worked because they offered to train children free of charge on Saturday mornings.

Where in Vaud are you located ? You see, in Zürich, there are various centres like THESE ones

and a variety of "Quartiervereine"

--- and so, it may be similar in Lausanne

but also the local church might help. Go to the service tomorrow and ask people there

All good ideas but I am not good enough to train children and don't know anyone who could. Frankly, power tools and children don't mix. I am really careful but still almost cut my face off with a grinder.

I will check if there is something in Lausanne

There is a little roofing factory next door to me. I will try and ask if I could rent a corner from them

I've been looking at houses online and have had some luck, though we'll see what its like when I arrive in April. If anyone in theBern area is keen, I could likely set something up for adults as I have friends that come over to work on projects and we have a pretty good routine going.

I know this thread is now a couple of years old. I am looking for woodworking opportunities in Zurich or in Zermatt. As mentioned in previous posts... doing it at home doesn't seem to be an option because of space constraints and noise. So, I have even thought of doing a hand tools project, or starting small projects like small boxes... Does anyone have any solutions?

Brad,

Check with your Gemeinde. Setting up a shop on your own is cost prohibitive, figure at least 150/month for a _very_ small space and 2-4K for tools. I have all the kit, but at the moment it is in storage. I am still looking for a double car garage space to rent, since I moved last August.

I replied in the other thread about woodworking that I have a place in Flums I'd consider opening up or even handing over. Not quite central Zurich but my search for that area turned up a blank so I ended up with Flums and have been really happy with the place !

Any life in this thread? I'm interested in a well provisioned wood/metal shop for occasional rent - ideally near Zurich/St Gallen - for home furniture projects. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Try a Gemeindezentrum like this one:

Its in Bucheggplatz Zürich, but I am quite sure there are many more around. An hourly fee and you pay for the wood, and there are lots of helpful people around.
