Hope this is the right forum as I wasn't sure where to post otherwise.
I am starting with the UN in a couple of weeks time. Wondering if its best to find accommodation in France or Geneva itself. I have strong French ties as I already live in France (Brittany), but wondering on the feasability of living say around Thonon or Evian.
I have no particular interest to live in Geneva, just to go for work.
There seems to be a decent train route through to Geneva, but from the Geneva station, how far and how would it be best to get to the UN, UNICC specifically.
I also guess that there are monthly etc passes for the railways?
the best place to find accommodation is where you can find it... not an easy task in this part of the world.
living in nearby france , i.e. Ferney Voltaire would be a fairly easy bus commute but transportation without a car gets more difficult as you move further away.
where I work we have one woman who comes in daily from Thonon area but she drives and it's an hour+ each way each day. -- 'fraid I'm not sure what the train connections are like from there
personally I would concentrate more on GE this side of the river and nearby france.
p.s.. from Cornavin to the UN HQ is about 10-15mins by bus or tram.
UNICC is up by the airport however ...so if you're commuting by train just stay on the train until it reaches the airport.. then its a 5 mins walk.
( make sure the train you're on actually goes to the airport.. most do... otherwise 15 min bus ride from Cornavin )
Thonon & Evian are NOT feasible. Public transport is poor so most people drive which makes a traffic mess. Not to mention you then need to cross Geneva and park, two more messes, plus it's not actually that close.
Grynch is correct. Live where you find a place! But stay on the same side of the river. It will save a whole lot of hassle.
