World Good News

Seems the news is full of bad news most of the time as the media seems to be incentivized by clicks.

I’ve been following Bjorn Lomborg for a while and find his insights interesting which inspired me to create this topic: share good news that doesn’t get reported or picked up by mainstream media.

Since this topic is prone to getting political quickly, let’s try to stay just within what is (a) good news for the world and (b) backed by scientific data. Stick to just sharing data that fits the topic title versus discussing posts on ideologicial grounds?

I’ll start with the Great Barrier Reef where I first snorkeled around Xmas in 2003:diving_mask: and last in June 2009:diving_mask::diving_mask: .
The vibe back then was that the reef would soon be gone.

I’m surprised I still own and use those blue swim trunks. Means I was already fat back then.

New analysis shows that total energy generation from solar, wind, and other clean sources surpasses coal for the first time in modern history

Sadly use of coal is increasing pumping all sorts of nasty stuff into the air we breath.

Interesting article. The topic I follow fairly closely is genetic testing. Disappointing to see this article so closely linked to one company. AFAIK, the state of the art is still not very good for two main reasons. Most companies will not actually sequence your chromosomes fully. Perhaps more importantly, the complexity of gene sequence/biological consequence relationships makes it difficult to reach useful conclusions even if one does have a full sequence. Very happy to be corrected.

That story was blown waaay out of proportion. The GBR consists of three parts, northern central and southern. The damage from the bleeching was heavily concentrade in the norhtern part, the southern was basically unaffected and central much less.

But moderate stories don’t sell.
