I've seen bicycle trailers (for transporting kids) like Chariot and Burley for over 1000CHF and low-end ones from Lidl , Marktkauf for 100Eur.
Can people with first hand experience shed some light on the features etc that are worth paying more for? Conversely, would the low-end ones be quite adequate for light daily summer use, say 3-4 km daily on paved roads ?
Also, are there any particular vehicle code requirements that bike trailers need to follow, such as reflectors, lights etc?
Yes, the cheaper ones will suffice for the distances and road surfacs you are taking about. I towed a lower end model from Basel to St Malo ( about 1200km) ABsolutely no problems - it was second hand when I got it, and is now still going strong as a stroller for the new owners.
Things to look at:
comfort for the child ( some seem to have a seat that slopes slightly forward, so not good for a child who wants to sleep - they flop forward.)
Ease of folding if you want to take it a vehicle - plus weight for lifting it
Do you want one that converts to a stroller? If so, check that it adapts easily and that the balance is good, that it will hold the straight line and that it will pivot easily.
Single? Double? HOw much stuff do you want to have in it , besides the child?
What age/size/weight can it take? Do you just want it for a sitting child? Or do you need to have one that has a harness and sling arrangement for nonsitters?
We bought a budget one second hand from another EF member and while it is a bit heavier (about 2-3kg) than the Burleys ect weight is not an issue given that it is loaded with kids, food, beer ect. It has done some fairly hardcore downhill trails and the only incident was a wheel coming off but that was my fault but as it has a steel frame, a few bangs with the hammer and it was good as new.
The critical features you should look at are the seat position, seat belts and head clearance (with a helmet on) with the canopy closed. It depends on your car space whether you need a more collapsible version or not. Factor in that you will need to transport it from time to time. Quite often on Sunday mornings we drive to Pfannensteil do a ride along the ridge for an hour with my older son riding as well, then a "downhill" run back to Meilen, my wife runs and then brings the car home. If you are more thinking town/road based I would save your money on the trailer and buy an electovelo so it ends up being more convenient to take the bike than the car and the kids love it.
Most important feature is a bit of spacial awareness for the rider. I see quite a few of these trailers just stuck out in traffic as the bike is safely ensconsed on a traffic island.
