I don’t think you can class the Swiss in anything other than regional accents, can you? There’s no “posh” Zuri-deutsch vs a less-posh version, as far as I’ve ever distinguished. Could be that more educated people have a wider vocabulary but that’s about it.
Maybe you could say that Swiss (Germans) could be separated by their willingness to speak High German vs Swiss who refuse point-blank because they were crap at it at school?
But, this includes literal millionaires with considerable political power that use dialect as part of their populist strategy around here. So, hard to tell from the accent if you’re listening to the village idiot or the political leader.
I was surprised when I learned about this some years ago. All citizens are equal, but some citizens are more equal than others. Not feudal, not modern/democratic, something in between.
There’s a wonderfully readable book on classes in the U.S., from top-out-of-sight (inherited money do-nothings) to bottom-out-of-sight (institutionalised/imprisoned). He debunked the myth that, as some people have long (and proudly) claimed, there are no class levels in the U.S. Since the book was published, his matrix has been warped by the fantastic (not in a good way) growth and distribution of wealth, but there’s still some truth to it.
Got to admit I laughed at the guy who said he was working class but was told he had a very superior walk, his reply was it must have been his Scottish upbringing
I worked with a lot of toffs in the City, a lot of them had no manners and one spent most of the week organising his weekend social calendar of stately home dinner and shooting parties. My Japanese bosses were greatly impressed by that!
The difference for me between the USA and the UK is that upper class in the UK is definitely old money, whereas in the States, apart from Boston, no-one really cares what what your heritage is. If you do get prissy about heritage, then you are definitely upper class.
I love Switzerland for being much less class conscious than most of the world. Unfortunately this is changing. Why?
As for the forks, what kind of idiot tries to balance peas on what is clearly the wrong side?
As you say, depends on where you stand in the hierarchy. If your ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence, that is still considered something, and there are many people who care. There are plenty of (relatively) skint upper class types.
I find very amusing when they jump over the protocol…but extremely irritating when they jump over table manners. That’s what makes us different than animals on a barn.
