Yahoo e-mail disappeared ?!

Hi all

Im not sure I chose the rigth category for my post but anyway..

So I was searching for some information online when I got an e-mail notification via my yahoo messenger, if you use it too you know what I mean (that little pop up square wich tells you the name of the sender and subject) so I was happy because it was an address I needed, but when I finished what I was doing and decided to go through my inbox, the e-mail wasn't there! so I was wondering if it is possible that someone who sent an e-mail and he/she changes her mind or make a mistake can delete it?? I don't think so but well, tecnology advances so much that this might be something new and Im not aware of? otherwise what could have happened?

Please if someone can enlight me with this topic will be apreciated..

Have a good friday everyone!

I've read some people were doing research about that, but I don't know if it's possible for the moment.

now, for more security, you should change your yahoo password.

I've been told it is not possible but they could be wrong.. gosh am I going mad? I'm 100% sure I saw the notification and then there's no e-mail! I even checked the spam and old messages in case it got mixed up but nothing.

I had a similar problem before so I changed my password because I used to use the same for everything (FB, EF, e-mail, networking comunities, etc.) and who ever hacked it, had access to all my info, now I use different passwords for everything, and I even created a new e-mail account to use English Forum because I had some problems because of that.. Before I didn't worry because I thought maybe was just a spammer, but if this is happening twice means it is something more personal last time nothing got changed, I mean, my e-mails and everything were still there, but I only realized that real time notifications were missin, so sometimes I would go through my facebook and find messages or comments I never saw before and was not notified about..

Anyway.. I will change my passwords one more time and hope this won't happen again, I don't want to give up my e-mail account because I have had it for so many years and I'm afraid I will lose contac with some people but it migth be necessary at some point .

Thanks for the sugestion Bertrand, have a nice WE.

its not possible for a sender to delete his message, once sent!!! perhaps u quickly deleted it , by unknowingly using keyboard shortcuts(delete button, in this case, in the new yahoo)? did you check your trash?

Yeah, I checked the trash and the spam, trash was empty and spam was.. well.. full of spam, and I was in a different page when the notification poped up so there was no way I could have deleted it, I was actually just viewing some pictures.. I tryed to contact the person who sent the e-mail via SMS and got no replay all day *sight*

If someone has the skills to hack an account, why not to hack someone famous rather than me?

It is possible, as you did not open it.

This is just one example. http://www.ehow.com/how_113821_recall-e-mail.html I think you will have to just back-track to your original enquiry and see if you get any help from there.

this is also possible in Lotus Notes as long as the receiver hasn't open the email. not sure if the receiver needs to be on lotus notes as well

Oh interesting, I wish I had Lotus or Outlook!

But in my case I have yahoo and my sender has bluewin, so maybe this doesn't apply. My computer skills are just null and my sender's probably -1 so guess I will have to wait until I manage to contact this person, but thanks for the tips anyway, I may want to open an account on one of those servers hehe..

You can setup your yahoo or bluewin to use Outlook as the client email software. Not sure about bluewin but for yahoo you need to upgrade and pay some yearly fee..... with Gmail this can be done for free. Hotmail as well since both Outlook and Hotmail are both Microsoft.

Thinking about it probably with bluewin it should be free as well. surely they cannot expect customers to use webmail only

The function in lotus and outlook works in conjunction with the mail server itself as long as the mail is still there and you're using mapi for email.

However, if you're pop then you're in essence downloading (and removing) the mail from the server after which it cannot be deleted.

I read an article some time ago that some similar functionality is in the process of being included in I think gmail, but I don't see such a function on my accounts...

What may have happened is a replication issue or a database error which resulted in a small number of email from being deleted in order to revert to a previously working version of the messaging store. For example, Exchange 2007 and higher lets you have an identical server running an identical database of emails. One server is constantly active, and as it updated the messaging stores with new emails, these changes are transferred over to the other server which is simply waiting to become active if the first one went down.

Now, if the first one receives an email for your mailbox and displays it there, but then breaks down before that database change is transferred over to the second server which then becomes active, it would seem like the mail got lost as your mail client gets routed over to using the new server as your messaging store.

No idea if this is what yahoo uses (haven't bother querying their messaging server to find out) but it could be one reason.

I hope I got it right, but for what I could understand I think it doesn't apply, in yahoo they develope new versions every now and then and is up to every user if they want to download it or not, of course you end up having to do it or you simply can't use all the new features, but it's been a while since my last upgrade, anyway, my e-mail is working perfectly, I sent myself a couple of e-mails one from another account I had to create, and another with the same account (the one with the lost the e-mail), also I asked someone to send me a 'test' one and I got all of them with their respective real-time pop up notifications from my messenger, I just spoke with the sender of the lost e-mail and no, I'm not going crazy, she actually sent that e-mail!

Uhmm this is quite unsettling, this lost e-mail is not the big deal because I was online, I know it was sent, and I just asked to get a new one, what makes me worry is if that was the only e-mail lost or there were others I'm not aware of that were sent when I wasn't online, and also I hope nobody is sending e-mails on my behalf, I will try to advice everyone just in case.

I did get a new account (hotmail) so I will try to use it with outlook, but the point here is that all my conexions are with this yahoo e-mail server and will be a pain to notify everyone, change my details in every single place I give it as a contact info, not to mention people you met years ago and somehow you lost contact with. I realized changing my password wasn't enough. I just don't get it, but I still hope it was just a system failure, even though there are no e-mails in my inbox since thursday (except the ones I sent myself and the test from my friend)

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, sometimes I just dont undersand all this technicisms. I use my laptop for the very basic, e-mail, networking, fun, music and edit photography.. anyway... so anyone has had a good experience with an e-mail server? wich one has worked best for you and has the best features? I think I need to try a new one now.

So I better go and start sending out my new address. Have a great WE!

There may be better mail services that I don't know of, but so far, I was more or less happy with GMX and Web.de . Give it a try. And use an e-mail-client such as (free) Thunderbird or, or, or... In such a program, you write/edit your mail as you're offline and only collect/send mail as you're online. That way, you have access to all your mails right on your computer. The configuration of such clients is somewhat tricky, but as with almost anything else, you can find step-by-step instructions via the Web, too.

You're just like everyone else

Unfortunately, computers and IT is anything but simple... it has grown into a rather complicated "feature" in todays world.

Some would say that email was never meant to be flawless, i.e. emails may occasionally never get delivered just as your typical post office may lose a letter destined to you. On the surface of it all, one might think that these computers should get it right and all mail should surely get delivered without issue, but there's a hundred steps involved in making a simple mail get from one recipients outbox to your inbox.

I've had perfectly reasonable experience with hotmail.

Zurihegel, thanks for the tips and links, I had never heard of Thunderbird, I will check them out, time to get out of my confort zone, emails keep desapearing, my inbox is empty since thursday, funny I just get the spam..

Shinigami, definately all but simple.. why do they have to make simple things so complicated, I mean, I waste I lot of time upgrading stuff, new version of this, new version of that.. why not to leave it just as it is if it works just fine? I wish I coud take here a computer skills course in english oh well.. thanks the info!

You're welcome! Just one more hint: Try to take it easy with IT technology, we haven't arrived yet where we expected to go with it. I say so after having been my own system administrator for 20 years now. If you are in doubt and need further assistance, please feel free to send me a PM and I'll try to do my best.

Danekova,

if you register an email account with Gmail, you have the option to import your Yahoo account and reply from the Gmail account using your current Yahoo address.

No need to worry about letting everyone know about a change of address.

Other servers will offer this as well, I just found Gmail had the most flexible options.

Once you have registered yourself an account with gmail, go to settings, then, accounts and import.

From there you will see all the various options you have.

Not complicated and not set in stone either. You can always change at a later date, should you wish to.

I recommend not to archive all emails in Gmail, as that may result in you getting the same email twice. Although, better twice than not at all

Doing this, will mean you have all your emails saved on both accounts, you have also the option to import copies of all your Yahoo mail into your Gmail inbox etc, which may also be good for you. You can reply from either account and for your contacts, they will see you just as you were and still be able to use your address as they know it.

This way if one server has a glitch, the other one not, at least, hopefully not, at the same time anyway.

I find the whole Gmail concept generally, to be very good and perhaps you may be able to have trouble free emailing in the future.
