Yayoi Kusama, 1929-2026

Kusama died aged 97. There was a recent exhibition of her work in Beyeler Foundation.

It’s interesting that she appears to have been mentally ill (“voluntarily lived in a psychiatric hospital for decades”). Wonder if that contributed to her creativity and ability to see things differently.

She actually passed away on 14 August, but her studio only announced the news yesterday. It makes me wonder whether she or her extended family received any proceeds, given that the sale of most of her works was managed by her studio. I visited her exhibition at the Beyeler Foundation last year—her work was incredible.

I didn’t manage to get to the exhibition at Fondation Beyeler, but I saw her work at Art Basel a couple of years ago and loved it.

We went to an exhibition by a Chinese artist called Cao Fei at the Gegenwart in Basel yesterday. Didn’t have time to see it all as there are a lot of video installations and films in it. She got into AI during the pandemic and OH is experimenting with it at the moment so we’re going to back again.
