Young drivers, and their driving licenses

I have just realised there might be a major problem for the few very young drivers arriving from abroad.

Many countries allow youths to drive cars and motorcycles under the age of 18 years old, and are happy to issue a full group A or B driving license.

But Switzerland insists on a minimum age of 18 for car driving & motorcycle riding, so when a young person arrives here, with a full A or B permit, I do not think he can drive using this foreign permit, until he is 18 years old. What do you all think?

.

One is obliged to submit to the laws of their new country of residence.

One is more concerned about O.A.P's driving.

Like in the neighboring countries, one must be 18+ to drive a car or over 50cc motorcycle here, regardless of being a resident or just a tourist.

I am not questioning driving skills (By the way OAP is British language identifying Old Age Pensioner, i.e.retired, so off topic! )

I am pointing out that new residents might hear that they can use their foreign license up to 12 months, before conversion

to a Swiss license. This is true, but only if the driver is over 18 years old.

Obviously the young person I quoted was under 18 as he asks why he cannot buy insurance online. He posts from Lugano,

says he is British and is a Student at USI (Username is Alexandern )

Actually, that's not obvious.

He said that the online insurance thing would not accept that he got his license before he turned 18, not that he is under 18.

"I got my driving licence when I was 17 in the UK. Swiss insurance calculators don't let you put in a date before your 18th birthday however.. "
