This is an article from the BBC website today re Deep Fried Mars bars:

"Chocolate manufacturing giant Mars has distanced itself from the famous deep-fried Mars bar by seeking a disclaimer.

The Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, in Aberdeenshire, claims to be the birthplace of the recipe almost two decades ago.

Plans to bid for EU protected geographical status were dropped.

Mars has written to the owners saying the product is not authorised or endorsed as it does not fit the company’s promotion of healthy living.

A menu disclaimer is being sought.

A Mars spokesperson said: "We are really flattered that customers of Carron Fish Bar like our product so much that it has now become a flagship product for the store.

"No application for a protected geographical indication has been filed to date.

“Should an application be filed, unfortunately, we wouldn’t be able to support it as deep-frying one of our products would go against our commitment to promoting healthy, active lifestyles.”

The deep-fried Mars bar has become synonymous with negative aspects of the Scottish diet since it was first reported in the Daily Record in 1995.

The newspaper called the phenomena, with its links to Stonehaven, “Scotland’s craziest takeaway” and said “sweet-toothed youngsters are ordering their favourite choc bars deep-fried in batter”.

By 2004, the reputation of the deep-fried Mars bar had travelled the Atlantic and it was mentioned on the Jay Leno Show in the US.

Later that year, UK medical magazine The Lancet published research from two Glasgow-based public health experts who thought the craze could be an urban myth as they had never met anyone who had eaten one.

They surveyed hundreds of fish and chip shops in Scotland to find out if “the delicacy” was available and if people were actually buying them.

It found 66 shops which sold them, 22% of those who had answered the survey."

Mars bars - deep fried or au nature - healthy ? Come on, who do they think they’re trying to kid?

Eating a Mars bar is not actually unhealthy is it! The big problem here is that if anything contains fat and sugar, people automatically think it's bad for you. It isn't bad for you but can be if eaten in excess.

I've definitely seen deep-fried creme eggs on sale in a Welsh chippy.

I'm old enough to remember the old advertising slogan..

'A Mars a day helps you work rest and play'.

You'd be surprised what I snaffle shortly before a long run to give me the calories to keep me going. I often eat two Mars Bars (or some equivalent) a couple of hours before I set off. Now if I could just find someone to deep fry them, maybe I'll hit my first half marathon...

Mmmph. I think my arteries have hardened just by reading that post.

where?. i'd like to try them!

Seriously? Ok here you go: Head out to the Asian market and get some egg roll papers/wrappers. Carefully fold up the edges of the egg roll paper around your Mars bar (after you remove it from its wrapper). Then deep fry for a few minutes just like you would with chips.

If you want super melty, let the Mars be room temp. If you want it to stay a little more firm, refrigerate for about 15 mins before you wrap it in the egg roll paper. Nosh with a side of ice cream. MMMmmmm.

You can also use pastry from the fridge section, but as it is not usually meant to be deep fried it is less good.

Let me know how that half marathon goes!

PS-You can also fry in a pan if you don't have a deep fryer, but it is more tricky.

They're Snickers now, but I don't see why you're restrictng yourself to just the half.

I tried one in Liverpool, it was foul !

Sugar = evil. Fat = ok. Dietary fat gets bad press, however dietary fat is not the same as body fat, the fat on your belly. Sugar becomes belly fat though.

Mars Bars are evil.

We used to live in Aberdeen, near Stonehaven (Stoney) and have been to the Carron Fish Shop mentioned in the original post. Not, I hasten to add.

, to sample the deep-fried Mars Bars

The shop revels in the fact that it's well -known for this weird dish.....people go there just to say they've tried it.

BTW....the Mars Bars are dipped in thick batter and then deep-fried......NOT wrapped in pastry.

Blech. Not where I come from. Egg roll wrappers are the way to go, trust me. Or don't.

I'm not advocating to eat it daily or even monthly, but if you want to run a 1/2 marathon, it will give you a good boost of sugar to get going.

It was chicken?
