How crowded will Zermatt, and the Gornergrat train, be mid-week in mid May? And would you consider this a dog-friendly outing?
Family are visiting, and it just occurs to me that in all my years here I have never been to Zermatt, so a good excuse to go and take a peek at the Matterhorn.
However, I’d have to bring Robin Goodfellow along. He’s tiny, easily portable... but terrified of crowds.
So good idea, bad idea?

Zermatt is normally a ghost town in May. Although it does seem to be attracting more non-skiing tourists all year round, so maybe it won't be as dead as normal, but it should be pretty quiet.
Carry robin in a small carrier and be first to jump on the train and sit behind the operator--best view in the house!
second that.... Robin should be able to fit into a number of different carriers. Also first class is often less busy.
The Gornegratt bahn is a cog-wheel train and is quite noisy. I’m not certain a nervous dog would be happy with that. The eggs up to trockner steg and those further up to the klein Matterhorn are much quieter. The underground funicular to Sunnega is somewhere in the middle.
Aim for something mid-morning or mid-afternoon and look out for large groups.
I believe that dogs travel free on the Gornegratt, not certain about the others. I’ve often seen St. Bernards, with an attached photographer up there.
