[Zurich 2023] Tailored men suits?

After having acquired some extra “experience” in life, especially around my belly, I am in the market for a suit actually two, one business and one more elegant.

I don’t need a Brunello Cucinelli, and I don’t want to travel by plane to get super cheap prices, I would happily go to some big dept store in Zurich but I have troubles finding decent sizes and styles.

Do you have any big store to recommend where they have a large assortiment?

Alternatively, any good place to recommend to do it custom or semi-custom?

I tried online shops in the past, they are cheap but the quality can vary greatly and randomly, I do not have time nor patience anymore to shop them around, get one, send it back when it doesn’t fit, get a second or a third one, have it adjusted by a tailor, etc.

I tried a German brand many years ago, Kuhn , they do it semi-custom: you go in person once, they take measurements, you place the order, they have the suit built somewhere else, then you go a second time to check final adjustements, and then they ship it to you. I was very satisfied back in the time but 1) they more than doubled the prices (and it’s not just inflation, I guess they just got much more successful and requested over the years), and 2) the closest shop is in Munich I think. But maybe there is some similar option, either in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy?

Thanks for any useful reply.

It’s been years but I’ve used these guys. A bit expensive but quality goods. I think the father, Raj, has retired but the son continues the business.

Take this any way you want but if you have suits which did fit you - wouldn't it be better (and cheaper) just to lose the extra weight?

Gaining weight when you are older is not inevitable and if you need extra encouragement, you could have a read of the current Type 2 diabetes thread.

Try suitsupply.

Good question. Depends on how pressing the need is. If you need the suits in a hurry, it would make sense to buy new ones as losing weight does take time.

Also if the suits are a bit old, then you may still need new suits especially if you have been using them quite regularly.

But if you buy the new ones at the "larger" size then when you get back to your "normal" weight, you'll going to have a load of suits that don't fit you.

Gaining weight takes time too and it doesn't suddenly stop, everything else being equal so in a few months, the new suits won't fit either.

In conclusion, Liposuction might be an easier and quicker solution than getting a custom suit fitted. Great.

I can also vouch for Suitsupply .

Speak for yourself, I can do it on a speedrun

In seriousness though, there’s merit in what you’re saying. I have set a rule for myself of no more new suits until I fit comfortably in the old ones again.

Luckily, my current job doesn’t require me to wear one.

@OP your best bet is like everyone says, Suitsupply. If by any chance you could go to them in another country, prices are significantly cheaper for the same products.

On the higher end, I can recommend these guys:

That's a great idea, why didn't I consider it before?

Kidding apart, I appreciate the effort and I agree with you that it would be better BUT given my time constraints and situation that's not really an option.

Suitsupply looks exactly what I'm looking for, thanks! I see that prices in IT/DE are cheaper, but not cheap enough to justify a trip (but it might make sense for more suits, yes).
