Zurich canton, b-permit renewal language requirements?

My permit expires end of year. I’ve searched this forum and read the Zurich canton office website which seemed ambiguous as hell for anyone who is not immigrating as part of “family unification”.

Do I need to show language requirements for renewing b-permit or not? I’m from UK if it matters and came in December 2019 originally.

Thanks for any advice. Sorry to start another thread, hopefully it helps others.

No reply yet so here’s a start, also bump.

Yes it matters. You’ve acquired the permit pre-Brexit and thus as EU citizen, this status is grandfathered . Accordingly, your renewal conditions are those of EU/EFTA citizens even though the UK is a 3rd country now. AFAIA the new B permit should also be valid for 5 years, you may want to check the new one’s duration.

As to what that means for your language requirements, others have to chime in. I don’t see any requirements mentioned.

However, with 5 years permit B soon in your pocket you can then apply for an early permit C (Niederlassungsbewilligung, see 3.9 ), for this you need verbal B1 and written A1.

Went to immigration office in Zurich.

For pre-Brexit people: A2 German for C permit or to renew b-permit, no language requirements.

Could you perhaps spell this out, please? How can there be "A2 German for C permit or to renew b-permit" but also "no language requirements"? That seems to be a contradiction.

- A2 German for C permit or

- to renew b-permit, there are no language requirements
