Zurich city or outside, where to live?

Hello,

I will be working in Ziegelbrücke and I am trying to figure out where to live between Zurich (Kreis 2, 3, 4) or outside, on the way to Ziegelbrücke.

Thalwil

Horgen

Wadenswil

Pfaffikon

Lachen

I am thinking to commute mostly by train but I will have car as well. What do you suggest? How are the villages mentioned above? It is faisable to live in Zurich and work in Ziegelbrücke? I don't know the area at all and not familiar with distances and traffic.

Thanks in advance

Too far unless you dont mind the hour commute each way on the S2.

www.sbb.ch is the rail website, do the calculation yourself for the other towns. Otherwise google maps for car distances, but then add time for traffic.

What do you want most from your town? I could live in any of them,

I see, thanks for your message Breeze!

Well, I don't have family with me therefore I am happy if there is a sort of social life afterwork. I will be out in town mostly on weekends though.

Me and my boyfriend live in Wädenswil and we love it!!

Hello dfed!

As breezy stated, you can see and calculate the total commute and evaulate it using www.sbb.ch . I live in Horgen, and all these places, between Zurich and Ziegelbrücke, are nice & lovely. If you are coming from a big city, don't expect any social life action in these towns though. All the social life action is in Zurich. From Horgen you would be in Zurich in 18-20 minutes with the train. Another alterntive could be to live on the south bound of Zurich (Wollishofen, Rüschlikon).

Good luck!

My and my husband are shortly moving o Wadenswl after 1 year in Horgen, our first impression is that in Wadenswl you have much more in term of shops etc. so I would recommended it!!!

Live in canton Glarus: it's cheaper, prettier and the beer's better.

Mind you, most beers are better than Carlsberg...

And Feldschlossen, and Quollfrisch, and Calanda, and...

most of which - these days - taste as if they are different labels stuck onto bottles of the same brew ...

Calanda definitely tasted better when it was still an independent firm. Even Feldschlösschen was marginally better.

Roll on the microbrews.

BTW, not to derail this thread any further , does anyone know why microbrew taphouses don't offer growler sales?

If living in an Alpine paradise doesn't suit, Wädenswil is nice and pretty much equidistant between Zurich and Ziegelbrücke, Lachen is expensive but can still be reached on the Zurich night train network, Pfäffikon is a soulless hole, and everywhere else costs a bomb.

Zurich to Ziegelbrücke only takes 42 mins on the Glarner Sprinter express train (every two hours at the mo, hourly from next year), 45 mins on the Interregio, and an hour on the slow stopping at all stations S2. Bear in mind tram connections too, though, if you live in the city. Because of train times, there is no benefit in living in any of the little towns on the lake unless the Interregio stops there (Wädenswil, Thalwil).

Consider also Rapperswil, quite close to Zieg with a regular train, and, as mentioned before, canton Glarus - although that would limit your late nights in Zurich somewhat.

PM me if you want more info on the Ziegelbrücke area. Good luck!

Ahem... I suspect the OP won't be working for a micro brewer...

Wädi-Brau-Huus , Wadenswil.

Wädi is well connected by trains ( up to 14 trains per hour includes the Inter-Regio and services to Brussels, Kiel, Hamburg, Schaffhausen, Chur etc. ).

Bus service runs all week, with slightly reduced service on Sundays. Has the best Chilbi and a "beach" by the lakeside.

City of Wädenswil is foreigner and family friendly. It is part of the Horgen Bezirk ( Horgen District ).

City Administration people speak English if required.

Rentals - slightly on the high side, but worth it considering the abundance of facilities, location and the mountains just at the back.

Not much use for your research, but nice to look at all the same, here's a webcam of Ziegelbrücke: http://www.bildersammlung.ch/ziegelb...cke/webcam.php

You can set it to play a short time lapse film of the day's weather.

Thanks a lot for all the advices, all places mentioned sound very nice to live.

I am planning to visit all these cities/villages then decide. Always lived in big cities (London, Rome, Milan, Paris, Moscow, Stockholm) don't know how is to live in a smaller community :-)

another suggestion: live in Wädenswil and the like in the beginning, its easier to find a place there than in Zurich. If it's too boring for you (which it would be for me), take your time to find a decent place in Zurich.

If you will be paying Quellensteuer then your income tax should be lowest in Kanton Schwyz, which would be an argument in favour of Pfäffikon or Lachen. Pfäffikon has good train connections to Zürich however housing costs (renting / buying) are relatively high.

By the way, the Comparis website has a withholding tax calculator that allows one to compare the tax that one would pay in different cantons, based on income, etc.
