If you are missing the likes of Japanese curry, tempura etc...make a trip to Zurich and shop at the Japanese store (a quick search on here will give you the exact address). All the ingredients you'd require for those dishes are there - even the sauces. And as for the black tiger prawns used for the tempura, the asian supermarkets will have a huge pack - frozen - but at very decent prices - about 30 chf. Defintely beats paying 35-40chf for ebi tempura in the restaurants and getting only 3 prawns
I personally find that it sucks! Bland food - definitely not up to scratch like their London counterparts - and thats saying something seeing that Wags in London arent all that either if you want authentic Japanese food.
Wagamama is not bad for "up market fast food", but approximately as authentic Japanese as I am...
Since some posts are really old and restaurants change over the years:
- Samurai did not change, really good and compared to the Sala and so on actually reasonable, especially the lunch menus.
- I went to Bimi tonight and I like it - it is what I would call authentic and good. http://www.swissbimi.ch/ . The "One pot dishes" - the wife had a Yosenabe - were very good.
Fujiya of Japan is a restaurant run by Japanese people, but they serve American Japanese food. It tastes great, great ambiance and very theatrical. I would recommend it, preferably if someone else is picking up the bill : )
Sala of Tokyo is the pioneer, and I hear they still have a great lunch menu.
If you are looking for authentic washoku, a good rule of thumb is to check whether a menu in Japanese is available and whether the staff is comprised of real natives from the land of the rising sun.
Ginger is delicious, but very expensive. It is definitely worth checking out though. There is also Weds all you can eat at smiling fish in Winthethur for 75 chf
couldn't agree more. I dont know why wagamama is so succesful.. would choose to go to ooki if you are in that area
Hands down - Samurai is the best Japanese that I have found in Zurich. Yeah, the neighborhood is not upmarket like Ginger in Seefeld, but the quality of the food is top, good value for money, service is friendly and it is a nice quant place...just make reservations because it is usually full - I discovered many moons ago but since they were written up in the Tages Anzeiger, etc...more people know about it which is not so great for me regarding last minute reservations but it is great for the owner, as he seems like a very nice man. www.samurai7.ch
2 other places I have found to be also quite good is:
SHINSHEN - walking distance from Sihlcity... www.shinsen.ch - nickname was Jap Fac as they also produce most of the sushi for the other Japanese places in Zurich...they also have a small restaurant and are open late and does catering as well
MAKOTO - a recent find in Adiswil : www.makoto.ch - the place looks a bit doggy and was not sure of it but once you past through the doors, it is a nice restaurant and more upmarket then one would think, given the area. Price is typical for Japanese in Zurich but the quality of their sushi/sashimi is very good
Oh well back to the kitchen for us, improving what we can when we can (we stocked up on some asia sauces/ingredients before moving here). Will have to do a torridon soon (chicken and leeks in a quite sweet sauce, very easy to make too).
I second this, very authentic by Zurich standards and delicious and reasonably priced (for Zurich). Not a sushi bar but fantastic noodles. Good beer too. They have Yebisu premium beer - great beer indeed. Owned by Saporro now. If you are ever in Tokyo a pilgrimage to the Yebisu brewery museum is a must, much like Guinness in Dublin:
Wagamama in Zurich is crap, really. I loved wagamama in London but here it's terrible, as it is in US. At any rate it's Japanese themed pan-asian fusion with a modern feel - fine as long as you aren;t expecting anything authentic.
Went to Ooki the other day. Good ramen in authentic (i.e. non-kitsch) atmosphere. My only complaint is that the mangas on the sill behind the window are too old.
I went to Ginger earlier this week. I wasnt too impressed enough on my previous visit to recommend it. We ordered the ala carte the last time but this time, my husband made reservations on the conveyor belt.
Good service right from the start and we had seats right in front of the itamaes (sushi chefs). Lovely to see them work as they were very skilled unlike those half-baked ones who try to pass themselves off as one. For sashimi, I told him to prepare whatever he thought was freshest and I wasnt disappointed. The lovely surprise was the price at the end. We had quite a bit of sushi and two plates of sashimi - plus 2 beers, and a pot of green tea. Came up to no more than 150CHF. Not sure if they undercharged but I thought it was really reasonable Zürich prices for decent quality sushi.
Will definitely go back there again!
Address for those of you who dont know where it is:
This topic keeps popping up in various thread incarnations.
I have tried them all and the 2 best in (or near) Zurich IMHO are:
1) Hotel Hasenberg in Widen (20 minute drive outside of Zurich) http://www.hotel-hasenberg.ch/ this is the only Japanese restaurant in Switzerland with a Michelin star. Run by Japanese, spectacular location.
