Zürich Knitting Shop

Hi, I want to start knitting again and my 8yo son wants to start too.

Im looking for shops that sell knitting supplies in Zurich or in the Thalwil and Horgen area.

Im guessing coop will have some stuff but are there any independant shops?

Thanks

Coop City in either Sihlcity or Renweg have a good selection.

This shop is nice: http://www.vilfil.com/index.php But dangerous!! I bought so much wool for different projects as got excited with all they had so I now have a big box with wools and haven't done much tbh.

Good luck.

Vilfil is indeed lovely. You may find some other small shops around, there's a Wulle Hüüsli here in Regensdorf, but no great selection. Have you considered shopping online? In the UK I got used to getting most of my yarn online – you're spoiled for choice that way!

Take a look at Ravelry.com, it's a huge and very, very useful membership site (free of course) for knitting, crochet and spinning. (This is my second Rav punt in my tiny handful of posts here! I promise I'm not affiliated with the site, I just love it madly.) There is a Swiss Knits group which already has some threads on the subject of local shops.

I agree! I got so much online as well. I know it is but once I was in Adelboden and they had this lovely shop there. So, if you are ever passing by...

Oh I never turn down the chance to visit a real shop! Online is great, but nothing like a chance to do some proper squishing.

Thanks for the responses. Vilfil in Zürich is lovely.

So, have you visited then? What did you get?

Slightly off-topic but not quite.

After knitting the English way for over sixty years, I've recently been busily teaching myself to knit by the Swiss method, the wool held in the left hand similar to crocheting. My granddaughter will be knitting at school one of these days and I don't want her to learn it 'back to front' from me and have to change to another method later. It is bad enough that Granny talks all funny...

There are lots of videos on the net to show how it is done, but it's very difficult not to slip back into 'old' habits for the fiddly bits.

Being able to knit both ways is the best! It took me ages to master continental knitting, but now I prefer it (faster, and much easier to switch between knit and purl, eg for ribbing). If you are comfortable with both methods, you have an advantage in doing stranded knitting eg Fair Isle: each hand holds a different colour.

To really mess with your comfort levels, look up Norwegian purling on Youtube – the yarn stays in the back at all times!

Manor has an acceptable yarn selection. Coop City is good. I second ravelry.com.

I would love to knit continental. I have tried several times and I drive myself bonkers!!!!

If you are in Baar there is a nice little yarn shop on the main street.
