zürich tagesschule - place to live in Altstetten & Oerlikon

We're moving to Zurich in August with 3 kids (10, 7, 4 yo).

I'll work in Oerlikon. My wife will work in Altstetten. Both full time, but with 3 days working from home.

We want to secure a Tagesschule.

Can you recommend a place to live in Altstetten or Oerlikon (or within 5 min commute) to make that happen?

Nice to haves: parks, family friendly infrastructure, expats with kids

Try to avoid: shared washing machines, construction cranes everywhere around

I am not sure how you can secure your place in a government 'tagesschule'.... but the info on the project to introduce more of these across Zurich is here:

Is the 4 year old of the right age to start Kindergarten in August 2023 ?

Will the 10 and 7 year olds be sent to an intensive language school first or do they already speak, read and write German fluently ?

Are you prepared that the children may all walk to/from school every day ?

Will the children share bedrooms ? - It can be *extremely* difficult to get apartments with more than 3 bedrooms.

Plus, if you are working from home, does that mean there will be days when both parents will be working from home at the same time ? I have been nannying in a household where this was happening and it was quite difficult to then have a child in the midst - even if the kids are supposed to be 'at school' there will be many sick days and the school closure days are not necessarily going to be the same... eg. teacher professional development days.

Construction cranes are a fixture in Zurich - you will not find anywhere that does not have them around....

What is your housing budget and have you also considered that if you need hourly care for your kids that could easily cost 30chf or more per hour (for a nanny or for 3x before and after school care....

That's for your reply.

A lot a questions and the answer is positive to all of them. We can budget up to 5k per month for an apartment.

We've been doing it already for 10 years now in our home country. Kids stay the same. Its just another country, better purchasing power parity, and no need to go to private schools.

In Altstetten district there are not many schools listed as Tagesschule. In fact only two Dachslern-Feldblumen and Altstetterstrasse. The other schools will follow but the year they become Tagesschule varies.

The new Freilager school will be a Tagesschule
