Zurich - the crazy costs of an optician

Went to Koch Optik to get the costs of replacing my sunglasses lens. 1000CHF!!
Then I went to Fielmann and the cheapie job would cost 298 CHF. Such a crazy difference. Now I shall get a quote from Fielmann in Konstanz.

Kochoptik offered Swiss alp crystal and Fielmann Chinese plastic.

You’re sure they both offered the same thing? Fielmann is always cheaper but you’re right, this difference is crazy.

You’ve got to be a bit of a Koch if you think David Beckham branded sunglasses are better quality than Fielmann’s own-brand premium ones.

How do you think that Beckham and others got so rich?

Not sure what type of material was being offered.

Used Fielmann once. Never again. Been using McOptic since.

I used them for my sunglasses and lens. Was satisfied with Fielmann.

But I will check out McOptic Zurich tomorrow. Their online site offers correction lens for 234 CHF.

Fielmann Konstanz ask 100 Euro! And less if one buys the frame as well!!! The robbers in Zurich! FRom 1000CHF at Kochoptik to 100 Euro in Germany. WTF

That sounds cool. Nevertheless I suspect your outrage cuold be slightly unfunded, remembering this:

However, main thing is you’re happy.

Probably the most unhelpful comment on the thread.

Perhaps you could have mentioned what you didn’t like about Fielmann or their products?

Perhaps Kochoptik’s lenses are made from glass and Fielmanns from plastic?
I’ve already mentioned the Kochoptik “fashion brand” frames which is another price differential.

But, you did mention that these were sunglasses so the quality probably doesn’t matter so much.

I’ve got some Computer glasses with glass lenses from Fielmann and they are great for computer work and reading but they weren’t 100 CHF.

Why don’t you compare Fielmann in DE with Fielmann in CH?

cause oranges and apples are both fruits (glasses). And generalisation is the thing now.

Spoken truly like a Swiss person.

I told someone (a healthcare professional) how cheap ibuprofen were in the UK compared with here (16 x 200mg for 55p) compared with 20 x 200mg for 10 CHF.

He asked whether the ones in the UK were from India, implying they were inferior.

There are many reasons for paying higher prices here than elsewhere but quality of generic medicines is not one of them.

The Kochoptik glasses are not automatically better because they are more expensive.

Fielmann Konstanz is Germany and I did compare the price. Read the posts.

That’s true, you did.

So Fielman has a Swiss price of Fr. 298.00 and a German one of Euro 100.00. It’s healthy to see it so clearly, me thinks.

By the time I’d factored in my travel time and travel costs to get to Konstanz it wouldn’t be a great enough advantage for me to be bothered with that. The price difference isn’t great enough for me to want to make that kind of effort.

I can see it making sense for somebody who lives near the German border and goes there regularly to shop.

20CHF return by train from Zurich to Konstanz. 298CHF from Fielmann Zurich was the cheaper offer. Otherwise the premium offer would be 400CHF. 5 years ago it cost me 300CHF for the premium offer. 30% increase in 5 years. What bullshit.

Every time I ask a quote to mandatory health insurance companies they jump to tell me they include 1 pair of prescription glasses per year for “free”. I just joke how cheaper the insurance would be without the “free glasses”.

They use this as a marketing tool, but maybe you can get this reimbursed by your mandatory health insurance provider if they have a similar offer.

Up to a certain amount only, afaik. If you have more than simple glasses, your out of pocket pay is still high.

If I remember well, the contract says the reimbursement of glasses is capped at 300 or 350 francs per year. Not a lot, but curiously aligned with the prices omtatsat mentioned.
