So I drove to France yesterday with no toll sticker. I didn't get stopped or anything and took the A3 and A35 there and back. Is there some way I can get still charged for driving without it? Am I worrying for nothing?
nothing to worry about, but if you want to be sure....send me the plate number or your car.......i will then report you to the police......and if they get around to it they might send you a ticket ok?
Absolutely you know those cameras you drove under many times guess what they look for? Vignettes and number plates. Expect some post soon or else get yourslef somewhere and confess and make the wrong into a right that could make it less of an issue as the swiss tend to like people who realise they made a mistake rather then trying to excuse it after
A few years ago, I hired a car from Stuttgart and drove (entering at Basel) through Switzerland down to Geneva then just over the border into France. Motorways all the way. Two days later I drove back along the same route.
No vignette, no problems. I don't believe there's any automated system, but I'm not sure how I managed to cross so many entry points into the country without being stopped.
Only reason I didn't buy a vignette was because I didn't know I needed one, and somehow managed to not take in all the signs telling me the opposite.
I have a coloured part of the windscreen on one car and I put the vignette by accident in this part. It is hard to see from the outside unless you are standing next to the car, I have never been stopped or had any problems.
Whilst I appreciate that you may just be trying to scare this or other posters into buying the vignette, as they should of course, this is patently not true. The technology to instantaneously scan for, find and validate the vignette, amongst many other possible windscreen stickers, for every vehicle on the road, then use that to decide whether to photograph the number plate, all within the split second you're in range... well, if it could be done it would be prohibitively expensive, at the very least.
I don't know why people (living in Switzerland) don't buy a vignet which is only 40 CHF?
Even if you don't use the motorway, it is 40 CHF ffs.
Exactly, there is no automated system to check vignettes. The only time the police will ever control your vignette is if they stop you on the M-way for some other reason. They will also be out in force at many motorway exits come end of January, start of February.
And when you shop for over 100chf in Denner you can get the vignette for even 35chf.
That's a considerable quantity of cheap Budvar.
I've seen the police parked in force at motorway exits. As you slowly drive past them they check for vignettes, seat-belts on, no mobile phone to your ear. If they don't like what they see, they pull you to one side and you then get the full inspection.
But there's no system in place for automatic recognition.
Just to add that at Bardonnex, the biggest exit from Geneva to France, they only ever check cars for vignettes on the way IN, never on the way OUT of Switzerland.
Thats where the annoying twats have wanted to sell me a new one as the old one was not stuck on well enough!
Since they're not speed cameras, what are those highly technical overhead structures equipped with?
There are quite a lot of cctv cameras, and some of them may (or may not) be linked to traffic detection systems.
They've got wise to that old trick. We used to do that too - buy one vignette wen we went on hols and pass it on to friends and family for them to use on their hols. Dunno work any more
But wine is 20% off tomorrow, so I may get two vignettes!
