Zurich to Zug best SBB ticket option?

Hi all

Need to go from Zurich to Zug return 2-3x/week. Wondering what the best SBB ticket option is to purchase.

Only need to go from this route - nothing further afield hence was considering the Point-to-Point travel card offer: https://www.sbb.ch/en/travelcards-an…n-tickets.html which is 257 CHF/mo (if paid annually). Downside to this is it doesn’t include Zone 110 in Zurich - Don’t need it, but would be useful.

Another option would be the GA card - don’t travel much on train hence not worth the extra it would be. 3860 CHF annually for 2nd class, 321.66 CHF/mo

Buying a half tax and purchasing day tickets as you go adds up quick but could be the cheapest way forward as there will be odd days not needing to travel - 120 CHF for half tax + 17.40 per day, plus the hassle of having to remember to purchase the ticket on the app getting on the train.

Any other options I’m missing here?

Thanks in advance

See if you can book supersaver tickets in advance for when you need to travel?

If I have calculated it correctly, a 6-zone Z-pass (which includes Zürich zone 110 and the zones between ZH and ZG) would do the job, and would cost 2061 CHF a year, which breaks down to 170 CHF per month.

https://www.z-pass.ch/zpass/de/abos-…z-zug-zvv.html

Edit: you would actually need 7 zones, as 110 counts double. So the price above would depend on you being willing to do without zone 110.

awesome tip! wasn't aware of the z-pass. so 7 zones (with Zone 110 Zurich) is 2313 CHF, so 192 CHF/mo - that works out cheaper than the daily passes with half tax and less of a pain having to buy the tickets every day. Appreciate the suggestion!

But unlike point-to-point travelcar these 7 zones won't cover all possible connections between Zürich HB and Zug. There are two lines - one is going though Thalwil and Zimmerberg tunnel and another one in direction to Urdorf.

Hm... quite the lack of flexibility. Though in reality will be taking slower train from Stadelhofen as want to avoid switching at HB.

A Z-Pass will cover both routes. The one via Thalwil as well as the one via Affoltern a. A. Still, you only pay for 7 Zones - CHF 257/month, CHF 2313/year.

Upgrade to all ZVV/Schwyz/Zug Zones is CHF 308/month, CHF 2772/year.

Upgrade to all of Switzerland/GA is CH 340/month, CHF 3860/year.

To be exact: There is no Point-to-Point monthly pass between Zug and Zürich HB. Only the Z-Pass with Zones. The monthly Z-Pass has no minimum duration and you must purchase each month a new one on your own, Monthly GA is a subscription and has a minimum duration of 6 months. There is also the GA for just one single month which costs CHF 420.

Thank you all - looks like the 7 Zone Z-Pass is the best bet especially as it includes Zone 110 Zurich. Much appreciate the insight
