Zurich zone extension ticket confusion

OK so this is regarding a zone extension ticket in Zurich......if I'm travelling 2 zones outside of my 'home zone' that I already have a ticket for (eg Zurich city, zone 110), do I need a '1-2 zones ticket' or a '3 zones' ticket?

I always assumed I needed a '3 zone extension', but my friend thinks only a '1-2 zones' ticket suffices, as it should cover 1 - 2 extra zones.

Thinking about it, the naming convention used is quite weird, as the ticket is named '1-2 zones', which could imply 1 or 2 extra zones, or it could mean from zone 1 to a 2nd zone......and all the other extension ticket names are just 3, 4, 5 etc

Only winterthur and Zurich count as two zones each. All the other zones count as a single zone. If you already have a ticket for zurich, you just need one additional zone for every additional zone into which your journey goes. So if you're only just crossing from zurich into the first neighbouring zone, you need one zone on your extension ticket, if your journey winds on and you cross into a further zone, you need two etc.

So whicht ticket would you buy if you went from Zurich HB to Horgen and already had a Zurich (zone 110) ticket? options are: '1-2 zone' extension, or '3 zone extension' ticket. Zurich to Horgen is 2 additional zones.

If you start in 110 and leave that zone, you need to count the zones you cross on your journey plus the zone you end up in and get the zone extender.

Pfäffikon SZ, for example, sees you cross 4 additional zones and get off in a 5th.

Ok, here is a question for you:

If you take the bus from Kirche Fluntern to Bahnhof Stettbach and you have a abo for Zone 110, do you need an extention ticket for Zone 121 or not?

do you pass through zone 121? If so then yes. But the end point is in 110 from what I can see.

Things to know:

The zone upgrade is nonspecific, which means the upgrade will extend to all sides of your home zone.

Examples:

You have 110 and buy the 1-2 zone upgrade you can first go to Horgen and later in the day to Bülach.

Or you have 151 you can buy a 3 zone upgrade to which allows you to travel to Zurich for Shopping and then later in the evening you can go to the Alpamare in Pfäffikon SZ. Or thake the boat to from Horgen to Meilen for a nice dinner

And if youn wonder why there is no 8 Zone upgrade:

"If your ZVV ticket plus your zone upgrade cover 8 zones, you can roam freely within the entire ZVV network." Source .

Online Anschluss Tickets Enter a station which is in the first zone outside your home ticket, Enter a station which is in the last zone outside your home zone. See Zones and Stations here. . For the OPs questions these stations could be Thalwil and Horgen for example.

Yes, you either need to get the one zone extension or the the long way round.

You pass through zone 121 so apparently you need ticket for Tarifstufe 110 and 121 according to ZVV.ch :-(

What I wonder though, let's say you have an abo for zone 110, can you then by a separate abo for zone 121 and then use this connection?

It could be e.g. that your employer provides you with abo for 110 but you also want to be able to travel regulary to zone 121 without having to pay extention ticket every time.

I recall having seen something here that this is not possible (think it was between Zürich and Zug though) which sounds really silly....

I don't think there is a rule saying you cannot have 2 abos. In fact I did precisely that for a while because of a situation similar to what you describe.

The thing with trains between Zurich and zug, or Zurich and Baden (another one that people bring up regularly) is that if you are using a fast train, ie not an s-bahn, then you can only combine abos if the train stops in the zones before and after the transition. Certain exceptions may apply. This rule only applies to fast trains, so if you're on a bus or s-bahn, you don't have to worry about that.

So if you are going from Zurich to Baden and the train stops in Dietikon, then you can use an abo that includes the zones of Zurich, of Dietikon, and whatever is between. If you get on the fast train that doesn't stop, then your zvv abo is not valid because it passes through those zones without stopping.

Also note that when you take 1-2 zone extension ticket. There is no zone written on them so there is much more utility of them. For e.g.

1. Assume you already have ticket/monthly-yearly pass of Zurich(Zone 110 paas) and plan to visit Uetliberg

2. You take train from Zurich to Uetliberg which passes through zone 110, 154 and 155.

3. You track from Uetliberg to Felsenegg and then take cable car from there to Adliswil and then you take train to Zurich. In this case you used public transport in Zone 110, 150, 155.

so in this case also you need 1-2 zone extension ticket.

This rule should be treated with a certain caveat. It is only true if the ticket has no zones written on it. This is generally the case if you buy from a machine, or buy from the ticket office saying precisely that. I have in the past bought tickets at the ticket office innocently mentioning where I was planning to go only to find the zone numbers printed on the ticket.

It is possible within the ZVV system (Thats why you cannot do this with Zug as it is another network system).

But it is indeed rather silly as a annual pass for 1-2 zones cost you CHF 729.00

or an equivalent of 173 full fare extensions or 251 half fare extensions.

But you can trade in your existing 110 pass to a 110 + 121 one for an additional CHF 342, or 117 half fare extensions respectively.

Actually you even have to take care in S-Bahns and busses (Bremgarten - Enge express line) as soon as you travel across two different zoning system.

The rules for about extensions tickets are different if you travel solely within one system or across two. And specially if you need an extensions in the ZVV side or the other side.

I think the thing is you can't buy a 1 zone extension ticket so 1-2 zones is the minimum. Zone 110 in central Zuerich is 2 zones of course. Similarly if I want to go from Duebendorf to the airport on the 759 bus the entire trip is in zone 121 but I have to get a 121/122 ticket.... Simples

Hey EF!

Perhaps someone can help me out.

While i understand perfectly well how to count Zone Upgrades, I am having a hard time understanding where this Zone Upgrade starts from.

For example, I currently have the yearly Zone 110 abo, and, let's say for a specific strip I also have to buy a ticket from Pfaffikon ZS to Lachen (regular ticket). If I have a 4 Zone Upgrade for that day anyway, can I use this Zone Upgrade from Zone 110 and onward AS WELL AS from Pfaffikon to +4 zones from there (since I have a regular ticket from Pfaffikon to Lachen anyway)? Or, is this zone upgrade only valid from Zone 110?

If any experts have any insight into that, it would be much appreciated.
