AHV and going abroad - how to get rid of mandatory health insurance

I am trying to prepare documents/data for when I retire. I had read somewhere on EF that the Swiss will apply a mandatory health insurance, even when you move abroad.
Does anyone have a link on this and especially on how to avoid that? I´ll have local insurance when I retire and don´t need Swiss insurance.

Thanks

Depending on what country you move you can opt out of that insurance, check the link.

You won’t find a private insurance for the same price, many probably will not even accept you, keep that in mind.

Site seems not to work at the moment, did a few minutes ago, sorry.

Thanks, health insurance is taken care of already.

Some other threads on the topic as well.

It’s very much individual cases as you have to apply for an exemption before you can cancel your Swiss health insurance. If you can’t get it then you have to continue paying the insurance regardless.

I find it incredibly stupid that when we move back to the UK one or both of us may still need to pay Swiss health insurance even though we both contributed while we lived/worked in the UK and as UK nationals and residents the National Health Service is supposed to be free for us.

I am personally interested in the topic as it may be relevant in the future. I understand from this

"Persons drawing a pension from their country of residence must take out health insurance in that country.

Persons drawing pensions from several countries (but not from their country of residence) must take out health insurance in the country in which they paid contributions for the longest period."

that you may be able to discontinue Swiss health insurance if you are resident in the UK and also draw some UK pension.

Yeah, I’m hoping we may qualify, but as you don’t take out health insurance in the UK unless you want to go private I’m not sure.

Not going to the UK, thanks for the links.

There is a form you can complete to ask if you are allowed to cancel the Swiss health insurance.
There is information on the Web about the conditions, but it may not be up-to-date

It all hangs on the UK/Swiss “mind the gap” agreement.

The basic idea is that you never lose your right to health insurance, which is important if you have an existing condition but not an issue with the NHS.

Here is another site with information.

The people in Olten make the final decision.

This is all about the Swiss basic health care cover; if you want supplementary, then it gets more complex but probably not needed in the UK.

When you are in the UK, you are still treated by the NHS, but if you have Swiss Health Insurance, then the NHS bills the Swiss.

Just tells you to go direct to kvg.

I know more or less about the other one. Seems hubby will have to keep paying while I won’t as I never worked here.
