Another 'Am I just being dim or...' question [Price of a ceiling-light]

Is this price for real am I reading this right: four thousand three hundred franken for a light?? http://www.goodform.ch/artemide-tian...elleuchte.html

This is the one I really want http://www.lichthaus.ch/tian-xia.htm but I can't find the price, a google search for the product name led me to the other site with the ridic price...

(yes we still have 2 rooms without lights yet!)

no youre not reading it right.

it says four thousand three hundred twenty one francs and nineteen rappen

ive seen similar prices both in euro and dollar now by a quick google?

Ikea sell lights you know

Buy it. This one is priced in Euros and is more.

On another note, you might like shopping at Pfister (as opposed to IKEA) if you like these types of items.

Maybe not exactly what you want but definitely cheaper ...

have you looked in Lumimart? - the nearest ones for you are in Emmenbrücke or Spreitenbach

http://www.lumimart.ch

There's also this place online

Thankyou, yes I've looked at lumimart, there doesn;t appear to be that many products listed on the site :/ thanks for the leuchtenhaus nad pfister links am checking them out now.

We do have some IKEA stuff! Including lights! (y)

Awww, I like that tian xia light so much! I don't want to pay 4k for it though, not at the moment!

I always wanted a Panton VB Globe lamp , but could never bring myself to spend that kind of money. By chance I came across a John Lewis Reola ceiling lamp for a fraction of the price. They are certainly not identical, but I brought myself to love the Reola, just as much as the Panton.

But a tip is to go in the shops, rather than browse online. You are more likely to find the lamp you will (eventually) fall in love with, without breaking the bank.

Good luck in the Search of the Light ;o)

Thanks all, I had no idea lights could be so expensive, had never bought any before we moved here; and having already successfully found a beautiful table lamp I absolutely loved for only 55 chf, I concluded that I'd be able to have something similarly pleasing to me for a similar price for the ceiling! Aww pity, that Tian Xia is so pretty <3 I'll keep shopping!

Nineteen Rappen?

From the OP's link, the price is 4.321,19 Fr. Perhaps used as a conversation-starter?

Neighbor: Oh, your new lamp is lovely, how much was it?

Pixie: Only four thousand three hundred twenty one Francs...and nineteen rappen!

I googled! I have been callinng them cents, have I been giving the wrong name?!

Edit, oh I see you are confused as to why there is such a random amount of cents/rappen

So what are they called then, these coins that have been building up in a tin in the kitchen because I get flustered when trying to count anything less than 2fr in the shops!?

It's a so-called 'Veblen good': ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good ).

The higher the price the more desirable it is.

Are Veblen goods for you? Simple answer: if you're shocked by the price, they're not.

"dim" and "ceiling light" - I like the thread title

As it is we are still mising a ceiling light after 5 years of living in our place, the ones we liked were just too expensive, but I think I will buy one in Germany now.

Yes they are Rappen.

Maybe I'm being dim , but the smallest coin is a 5 Rappen, so how do you get 19 of them?

Minimum purchase: 5 lights.

right. so the actual amount would be four thousand three hundred twenty one francs and twenty rappen.

come to think of it, do shops actually price things as 0.99 or 0.95 if they want 1 chf and make you think its only a few cents? i don't consciously process that apparently.

Living in Switzerland is basically like living in the airport.

Pixie B, you are funny! You have inadvertently stumbled into the craze for authentic mid-century modern style and design. Artemide, Flos, Serge Mouille, Jean Prouve, Charlotte Perriand, Poul Henningsen, etc.

These are companies and architects in the 50's and 60's who made designs that have become so iconic that the prices have gone through the roof.

You have three choices if you like this look. You can buy an original from the maker that is still in production to this day. This will be an authentic piece. Some of Serge Mouille's lights go for upwards of 10,000 USD.

You can buy a chinese knock-off reproduction. You will find these in Hornbach, Interio, Fly, etc.

You can diligently search ebay or brocante fairs for originals from the 50's and 60's but be aware that the prices for vintage originals will be almost as much buying a new one.

Centimes.

Who, would pay all that money for a light. And how much are the bulbs to go into it? Which are probably very special ones only to fit that light...!!!

I have a couple of those round paper lantern things still in my storage unit, will suit me when i find a flat.

Ah, thankyou! I was about to post last night, I can't believe there is no cheap imitation, there are always cheap imitations if you like the look of something but don't care about labels/status! I will check out the knock-offs! hurrah

I was unaware of the craze for mid-century design, I wouldn't even know what mid-century design looked like anyway

off to look at the knock-offs!
