Antiperspirant - does it exist?

Never thought I would be posting on such an important subject!

Anyone know where(if) you can get this in Switzerland? I have lived here quite some time and can't seem to find it. You can get normal deo everywhere but not a-p. Normal deo is not as effective. Could be something to do with the Swiss chemical laws (gifteklasse) perhaps? the active is aluminium chloride complex so may be it's banned. A small but irritating issue - perhaps it's why there are smelly people here - see other threads.

I find regular washing with water and soap to be most effective.

For the less assiduous, I have noticed a product called 'Axe' for sale in local emporia. I understand that this is a popular and effective cosmetic product for those gentlemen who wish to attract ladies of a certain kind, while wafting around town smelling like a Smyrnean brothel.

For the gentleman, however, there is always this: http://www.carbolicsoap.com/carbolic...-12-p-826.html

There was an advert for Lynx (=Axe ) in UK which was a TV commercial which features thousands of scantily dressed women swarming across the beach toward this guy who has simply sprayed himself with this deo.

I made a complaint to Advertising Standards people, expressing not just my disappointment not just that it didn't work .......but also that it was misleading advertising...my complaint was rejected as it was supposed to be "humourous"...but I did get a nice letter and it was given reasonable consideration...

I'm delighted to hear that my film biography made it onto English television - although I'm appalled that it was hijacked by some tawdry advertising company.

In fact, contrary to the advertisers' claims, the scent which aroused the attention of all those lovely ladies (it was a beach in Barbados - I remember it well, and still have a clicking mandible to prove it) was nothing more than the honest aroma of a true English gentleman's perspiration and carbolic soap.

It drives them wild, I tell you. Like voracious beasts. Or puppies with a squeaky toy.

I was lucky to get out alive.

Check out your nearest Globus, COOP, Migros, local perfumerie etc...any place that sell hygiene and parfume stuff... at least in Basel you can find it pretty easily...

I also haven't found an antiperspirant in Switzerland yet. Most seem to be only fragrant deodorants used to mask b.o. Deodorants with high amounts of aluminum zirconium irritate my underarms if used for a prolonged period of time. I once used Mitchum brand antiperspirant only to discover scabs on my pits after 2 months of use Now I use Toms of Maine natural deodorant. Sure it doesn't work quite as well, but as long as I shower regularly it's not a problem. My underarms are much happier. Alas, I've probably a week before I have to buy a new stick. I'll ask my sister to mail me some.

http://www.tomsofmaine.com (apricot scent owns, lavender too!)

When I was 13 or so, my moms bought me some sort of salt crystal rock that I was supposed to rub on my armpits. ( http://www.lonatural.ukcentre.com/ ) That was pretty shite imo but it's another safer alternative if your skin is prone to irritation from the aluminum chlorohydrates.

Good luck in your search! I'll be sure to post if I find something in a store here in ch.

funny topic for a thread but i can relate to it.

I know buy mine from Migros. Nivea (For Men). Blue can.

seems to do the trick.

know what ya mean though.

peace.

Try Denim liquid roll on! Easy to find in Coop amongst other places.

I totally understand you on this subject. I also tried about 10 different deos here in switzerland but last week i finally found a really good deo at muller@ jelmoli called anti svet. made in germany. it comes in a small box but its a little spray bottle. Its has stopped the underarm sweating and smell. hope it helps

After trying on several nasty smelling deos in the market I settled for the one that works best.

Mum, non-parfumed deo, available at the coop, in roll-on only.

This is the best, no cheapo parfume, only good and plain anti-bad-odor

Can someone enlighten me here. What is antiperspirant ? My Rexona bottle has "antiperspirant-deodorant" written on the bottle and I am not enough of a chem goddess to be able to decipher the ingredients.

My limited knowledge about it is that

Sweat has not necesarily a bad smell, it depends however on your diet.

Sweat when mixed with microbes, fungus and dirt present on the air and on your skin would have bad smell.

The said mix of sweat and dirt, ferments over the time yielding stronger and nastier bad smell. Specially on the less aired zones, like armpits, feet and crotch regions.

So the deodorants, have components that neutralize the mix and fermentation and a parfume to cover the reduced bad smell.

Antiperspirants, inhibit sweating, keeping you dry. It is a stronger protection as if there is no sweat then there is no mix and fermentation.

I imagine that antiperspirant is not the good way to go, as your body needs to free sweat.

Maybe a chemist could explain it better

That must be why my armpits smell like stilton cheese.

for how long do you yeast your armpit cheese ?

A deodorant usually only contains some solvents/carriers and parfume + maybe some "caring" ingredients - it only covers up the odour...

An antiperspirant actually makes you sweat less where you've applied it and takes care of the odour. If you check the ingredients list and it includes an aluminum salt (it says aluminum + something more) then it is an antiperspirant.

Your Rexona is most likely an antiperspirant and with the perfume in it also a deodorant...

My husband gets a rash from many deoderants. He now uses Sibonet and is very happy with it. Cannot be found in Migros!

A pharmacy may carry something in the way of an antiperspirant. I have heard that these deo-sticks made from crystals actually make a difference with sweat as well. . .even though they do not advertise it on the packaging.

Way back when, when I was in the Girl Guides, I am sure that the remedy for persistent perspiration was a dusting of sodium bicarbonate under the armpits.

Also, armpit sweat doesn't smell unless it's old.

But, like DaveA says, Rexona is supposed to be an antiperspirant/deoderant. Give that a go if the Girl Guide bicarb solution seems a bit weird.

Aluminium Chlorohydrate. So why the difficulty in sourcing the stuff ? Rexona and similar is on sale in every pharmacy, supermarket I have been in.

Where is Chemgoddess when we need her?
