Apple IWork 09

Hi all,

I had no problems getting hold of ILife 09 but cant find anyone who will ship IWork 09. Is there some restriction I don't know about? Amazon seems to imprly there is. All the copies I have seen in CH are in either French or German and I need it in English. Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

Have you looked on, say, kelkoo.co.uk, and tried to have a copy shipped to you in Switzerland?

Just tried. Sadly no. Only gives me Amazon again and someone else who needs a UK postal code. Wierd.

Ok, the Swiss site is in German (or French) but the software is multi-lingual. (free shipping)

hey,

try downloading the trial version from this page

http://www.apple.com/iwork/

you can by the licence key from apple with a credit card

( i have the trial version running now, but haven't go around to paying for it yet)

Does the trial version put a "trial version" watermark on everything you print out..?

I had wondered if it was multi lingual. The man in Lausanne Pnac had said it wasn't. I had one in my hand and put it down. Grr

The documentation that comes with it wont be in English but the software is.

an afterthought....

have you used iwork09? if not, take advantage of the 30 day trial i mentioned above. give it a go before buying

I liked it, but to be honest, i am also running an academic version of Office for Mac (08) and found that Excel is a lot better than Numbers. If you are interested in big spreadsheet, scientific calc's and complex graphs, you may find that Numbers just doesn't cut it.

that said, I quite liked the word processing and presentation apps (Pages and Keynote).

(and, can I point you in the direction of Things and Merlin for time and project management purposes. Things can be synced to iPhone/iTouch with an app available from the App store and integrates well with iCal. I would rate it indespensible).

good luck with it.

You can download the full version of iWork 09 right from Apple's site: http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/

This is a 100% fully functional version which expires after 30 days unless you purchase a serial number which allows you to continue using it uninterrupted should you wish to do so.

It should localize into whatever language your OS is set to.

30 day trial appears great. Will give it a go. Assume it wont mess up my current pages documents from 08 if I use then decide not to buy. I will be back in the UK within the next 30 days so can pick up a copy then. Cheers for the link to 'things'.

You don't need to pick up a physical copy from anywhere. You can download the trial , which then installs the software under an iWork '09 folder. Within 30 days you can then either:

a) Pay for the full version online with your credit card. You are then sent a licence number which you enter into the app, and the 30 day expiry date disappears. You continue to use the apps as normal.

OR

b) Decide you don't want it, in which case you can stop using it and revert back to the 08 version of the apps, which will still be on your system and will continue to work as they always did.

You don't need a physical version of anything, and downloading 09 will not overwrite the 08 apps.

Th man in Lausanne FNAC doesn't know what he's talking about. I picked up iWorks in the German language box and installed it on my English Mac. No problem. The same is true for iLife.

Try openoffice at http://www.openoffice.org

It's free, open source, compatible with MS Office files, available in all the languages etc.etc.

The Mac OS version is good, well integrated in the system (no need to run it under X)

No it doesn't do anything silly like that. After the 30 day trail period expires, you can't save, print or export, but you can buy a serial number to unlock it at any time - that appears to be the limit of the restriction.

The same is true for all Apple software I have bought since late 2003. The first question the installation asks is what language you want to use, and from there on it's plain sailing.

In fact it's better than that, as you can use all the languages supported by a given piece of software at any time after installation. If you want you can set up different languages for different accounts - ideal for a multi-lingual household, or switch on the fly.

I've just knocked up a list of languages supported by iWork:

Languages supported by iWork ’08

Dutch

English

French

German

Italian

Japanese

Spanish

zh_CN Chinese (PRC)

Languages supported by iWork ’09

As above, plus:

da Danish

fi Finnish

ko Korean

no Norwegian

pl Polish

pt Portuguese

pt_PT Portuguese (Portugal)

ru Russian

sv Swedish

zh_TW Chinese (Taiwan)

I was going to say that it isn't worth the effort of purchasing the English version for the sake of installing it, but my German version of iWork '08 also came with a 139 page introductory booklet. It would have been nice to have that in English instead.

True, but pretty much everything is available online.

As far as i know, almost all apple software is multi lingual...

actually can someone say if the whole logic studio or final cut studio packages are also multi lingual... i assumed they are but you couldnt quote me on it.

ilife and iwork are definitely multi lingual though, it is just the documentation which is region specific.

Personally, I had to choose microsoft office for mac simply because for compatibility and integration with what most people use, it is still the best.

Since the home version is now chf 199, its actually relatively affordable compared to years gone by, when almost everyone i know (me included?) either got a cracked copy or a copy from work because it was so prohibitively expensive.

My main gripe about office for mac is the sluggish opening times for excel and word.

Yes but:

Unless Apple give me a discount for buying online rather than buying a physical copy, I prefer to buy a physical copy. If cbb is going to the UK anyway, he/she might as well pick up a copy with the English documentation rather than buying here. I've just looked up the prices for iWork and iLife in the UK (£69 for the single user version, £85 for the Family License Pack vs CHF 109/139 here). At the current mid-rate of 1 GBP = 1.69287 CHF (from xe.com ) it is cheaper to buy here at the moment (69.00 GBP = 116.808 CHF).

Those are VAT inclusive prices of course, and the UK VAT element for the £69 single user version comes to £9.00 (versus Swiss VAT of CHF 7.70 on the price of CHF 109 here). If you are going to claim UK VAT back and then pay the Swiss VAT here, it's cheaper to buy in the UK.

It doesn't make much difference at this price level, but if you are thinking about buying the high end products and are planning a visit to another country anyway, there are potential savings to be made.
