Audi A3 repair cost

Hi everyone,

Our son has damaged the neibour's Audi and we have to pay for this (yes, we don't have that insurance for third part damages or whatever it's called).

So, they have to repaint the hood and replace 1 wing. The owner asks 3000CHF from us. I'm just wondering, isn't it too much? What can we do to avoid overpaying? The car is Audi A3 Sportback, 2007. We are near Baden AG.

Thanks!

I would politely ask the neighbor for a copy of the written estimate of the repair cost from the garage or repair shop.

I would then take it (along with photos of the damage, if possible) to another garage to get an opinion of whether the quote seems reasonable.

# 1. Take pictures of the damage as well for your personal record.

Thank you!

We've got the picture. It really doesn't seem so awful.

I would say that CHF3000 is the going rate.

But you should offer to pay the bodyshop bill directly, so you know the exact amount. As you are the party who did the damage, it's not up to you to choose the cheapest repairer!

Oh, and update your insurance...

Price is quite reasonable for Switzerland TBH.

Here's the pic

Can't believe that...

He says the whole car costs 7500CHF. Could a wing and repainting a hood cost a half of the car???

Repair costs are several times the cost of a new car. You could just buy the car if you prefer..

7500 is the car's current value, new it was probably 40'000 or even more.

Sure, but it has nothing to do with the price of a new one! As far as I understand, we're responsible for bringing it back to its 7yo condition.

I'm not a specialist at all, but, for ex, autoersatzteile24.ch says, the wing for such Audi costs not more than 100 CHF. Suppose its montage and repaint work cost even twice, I get 500CHF, far less 3000CHF.

Ok, we'll see what the Karosserie says on Tuesday. Thanks to all!

Remember the price is new parts, not used.

Oh yes, it does. Spare parts are generally priced in relation to the price of the new car. (Compare the price of a fender or a hood for a Dacia and a BMW 7-series if you like...)

That's some third party supplier, original Audi parts will cost more.

Some brats once scratched a door of my metallic paint VW Golf. I don't remember the exact amount but it was between 500 and 1000 just for the paint job - and that was 20 years ago!

A few years ago, my wife damaged her Panda.

Fixing the door, replacing the RF wing, and paint was a good deal at CHF 1500 (half the price of the car). I would expect an A3 to be more.

From the picture, it does not look like the damage happened when the car was being driven.

In the case of accidental damage to property (say for instance dropping a flowerpot from the balcony onto the neighbour's car), this would normally be covered by a third party liability policy (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) which is usually sold as part of part of a household contents insurance policy.

Such an insurance is normally mandatory if you rent an apartment and is certainly a good idea because, when you move out, the owner or agent usually finds small (but expensive) items of damage which have to be paid for.

As for the comments about the cost, from my own experience of 2 lots minor paint work repairs costing over 1'000 SFr. each, it looks about right.

My son damaged the side of our neighbor's car with his bicycle. Nothing as terrible as the picture you shared here...but it costed 1000chf. I have a liability and property damage insurance and they covered 80% of cost.

It doesn't seem awful since you're not the owner of the damaged car. Any damage to your own car is awful! Especially if your car is just parked.

Anyway, the logic of the repair price isn't based on the current value of the car. You are going to have to pay brand new parts, old car or not.

We have a mercedes viano that needs some repair, the value of it right now is around 6,000CHF but mercedes estimated the repair would cost 5,000CHF. That's just the way it is.

But you must/should have (each member of your family individually) an insurance called 'Responsibilite Civile' no idea what that is in german but it's the compulsory insurance that covers you if you cause damage or an accident during your day-to-day life.

#2 son broke the glass porch cover at our appartment building years ago by accidently dropping a plantpot onto it from his bedroom window, we were able to claim the costs back from our RC. Same thing when he slammed a door shut at school and broke the glass pane in that.

As for the cost of repairs, even minor repairs can be costly, garages fees are pretty high here and the type of work required in your case (replacing body-panels and repainting) are specialist jobs.

a) It's NOT compulsory.

b) There is no need to have it for each member individually.

That said, it is a good idea to have it, costs about CHF 100/year for the whole family.

Really?

When we arrived in Switzerland we were told that it was.

Still, if it isn't then it damnèd well should be!
