I had to pick up one of the cars from the garage last night - and as usual it had been cleaned inside and out - I have had this car 5 months - and it has been into the garage so frequently I have never washed it
Anyway, when doing this I tend to leave work, go for a 2 hour run along the hills, get to the garage and drive home. Last night my shoes had got rather muddy - so I slipped them into some plastic I had in the boot - and drove home in just my socks.
It was a rather odd sensation - the clutch took some getting used to - but throttle and brake control was really rather nice. The sensitivity in which you could modulate them both was rather impressive.
My sister always drives barefoot, she says she feels she has better control. I tried it once or twice out of necessity and it actually felt quite comfortable.
Another common myth is that it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle while barefoot. Some people speculate that, because you use your feet while driving, there's more room for error and your feet could slip off of the pedals, resulting in an accident. [[7]](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barefoot#cite_note-daily_vidette-6) In fact, in all 50 states and territories in the United States , as well as in Canada , and in the United Kingdom , it is perfectly legal to drive barefoot However, in some jurisdictions, police officers may ticket you for other things if the fact that you were driving barefoot or in flip flops /high heeled shoes hindered your driving and/or resulted in an accident
Tried it few times, but could never get used to it. All of a sudden the clutch and brake seemed 3 times heavier and the accelerator not responsive enough. Don't get me wrong, I could do it, but it never felt comfortable, nor was I ever at ease with it.
No problems with driving games on the Playstation though
My brother used to drive lorries across Europe and he always drove barefooted.
For long journeys or for hooning I have started using my Karting racing boots, which have very thin soles and great heel support. Much more confortable than driving in normal shoes.
Not sure if it is illegal, but there was an information stand with TV at Zurich HB a couple of months back trying to make people aware of the bad injuries that occur during car accidents due to the choice of footwear.
I've had my car crumple around me - and i'm glad I wasn't wearing flip flops.
