best stretch mark prevention product during pregnancy

ladies, can anyone recommend me a good stretch marks prevention product, which works? I havent been able to find a good cocoa butter cream here..suggestions? I read a lot about trilastin SR cream...is it really effective and can i use in during pregnancy or its better to do it after?is it better to check with the ob-gyn before using any of these products??

also,

thanks!!

Sadly there is nothing that can really help - they are all gimmicks. You either are lucky and don't get them or you have no option - it is mostly genetics, so if your mother had them, it is highly likely you will. The normal cream is just as good as the CHF 100 type that they try to market.

Don't buy anything expensive, you can try just a regular lotion but if it's going to happen it will

im just over half way, and have no strectch marks as of yet!!! i used bio oil from the day that i found out which i bought with me form the uk, they dont have it here, but if u go into a chemist and ask, they recommended me a oil product especially for pregnant women, its a large bottle, about 25chf, and lasted me a long while, sorry but the name has slipped my mind.

good luck and hope all goes well for you.

My mother and all my cousins had stretch marks, except me.

I got stretch marks on my thigh when I was a teenager, but in both of my pregnancies, I had NONE.

So in my case, it can't be a genetic matter.

I used this product from Weleda in both pregnancies. Is it because of this product I don't have any stretch marks? I don't know since everybody say no products works. But in my case, I believe I should have had them since I already have some on my body and all the women in my family who got kids had them.

So it is a very good product or I have been very very lucky....Twice!

My mum and sister had them (although not on a grand scale) but I got off scot-free without any.

I didn't really do anything special to prevent them, just carried on with my usual body lotion (Coop's Prix Garantie Body Lotion - I'm a cheapskate) and even then I had days where I got dressed in a rush straight out of the shower and forgot it completely.

I think the trick is not to gain excess weight during the pregnancy. Everyone gains a bit but if you gain a lot on top of that the skin has to stretch even more.

Not if the genetic cause is recessive (not sure if this is the case though), and you got good genes from your dad to compensate and your cousins did not (so you should thank your dad . Also, the cause is partly hormonal, thus you might be more susceptible at certain times in your life during hormonal changes like in your teenage years.

There is SOME evidence that SOME women might benefit from creams and massage, but it is unclear if it really matters what the ingredients are:

I used the Weleda pregnancy oil religiously, twice a day and still got stretch marks, and I only went to 36 weeks so it could have been worse. They didn't appear till the last week or so (I thought I'd managed to avoid them), so unless you put on tonnes (literally!) of weight I'd be surprised if anyone got them as early as 20weeks.

I got some stretch marks on my hips during puberty... nothing serious. That combined with the fact that my mom had pretty serious stretch marks from her pregnancies made me concerned when I got pregnant the first time. I always just used regular body lotion when getting out of the shower and sometimes the Weleda oil (although not consistently) - never got a single stretch mark in my 2 pregnancies. I think, like others have said, it's more important to gain only a healthy amount of weight during your pregnancy. However, some people are just going to get them and there's no way around it. I've had friends who had some pretty serious stretch marks, but after time they faded so much that they were barely noticeable. Try that Weleda oil - if nothing else it will keep your tummy skin nice and soft for baby to rest on when he or she arrives.

Unfortunately there's really not a product to prevent stretch marks. During both of my pregnancies, I used regular vaseline on my tummy, right out of the shower. It works best when your skin's still a bit wet. It helps keep you moisturized, prevents the itching.

I believe oil is more effective than cream or lotion.

Whatever you do, don't use a cheap cream which contains glycerin, as this brings water to the skin's surface but dries it out eventually.

Yes, Weleda are great products, but the one which worked for me was Clarin's Huile Tonic:

I didn't get a single stretch mark on my tummy - although I understand that genes and skin type do play a large part here. I was lucky!!

i used a cocoa butter lotion from johnsons i think which i ordered from chemistdirect.co.uk - they ship to switzerland for £3.95...

i didnt get any stretch marks but not sure that was down to the cream! i also believe its in your genes but using the cream made me feel better

ya..i was recommended this product at the pharmacy...but was not sure. the pharmacist said its very good...i guess i will try it..thanks! by the way, do i need to check with my ob gyn first, before i use this product?

i wanted to buy one ..saw one in TOYSRUS... it said it is almond oil based...i just thought why nou use almond oil itself... i am using that only..not very scared of stretch marks

At the end of the day - you want to make sure that your belly is hydrated, all of that stretching on your tummy causes more prominent stretch marks to occur. Granted some folks are genetically inclined to get them more based on the type of skin they have (sensitive, dry...etc). So yes, lotion is the best remedy for at least reducing the appearance of stretchmarks.

Unfortunately, I did the gimmick, bought the Vichey version at my local Apothoke, then I went to Toysrus near Lucern and found the cocoa butter stretch mark version (extremely cheap - about 30-40CHF less than the Vichey) and actually felt that that bottle helped to keep my skin hydrated throughout the day rather than the constant applying of the expensive version.

And make sure to keep your motions in a circle cycle - Not sure how effective it is - but they say if your moving your hands in a circle (clockwise and counter clockwise) directions, it helps to ensure that your not pulling the stretch marks even wider.

I also used the weleda oil throughout my pregnancy, on tum, bum, thighs and boobs, and didn't get any stretchmarks.... but then neither did my mother back in her child bearing days.

I have also frequently heard the whole stretch mark thing is due to the genetic 'luck of the draw' but I guess it doesn't hurt to try to at least minimise them.

I also often used the big tubs of brazil nut or coco butter from the body shop (which I seemed to receive a lot of as gifts), but preferred the weleda oil - despite it being an oil it soaked in well and didn't leave me with such a slippy greasy feeling on the skin surface.

I actually found it quite difficult to find products I could comfortably use, because I became intensely sensitive to smells whilst pregnant and a lot of normally perfectly acceptable product smells become stomach turning for me whilst pregnant (most of my perfumes and OH's usual spray-on-smells had to go in to hiding for those months). So if you're anything like me, then I suggest opening the bottle if possible and having a sniff before you buy!

I'm using Dr Hauschka's prune oil for pregnancy, and while I don't know if it will prevent stretch marks (I haven't noticed any yet but maybe it's too early), my skin looks much better. I'm using it all over, not just on my belly.

In the early 70s, all the fancy and expensive oils weren't on the market. I put a lot of weight on, and never got a single stretch mark. Sadly my elderly daughter got some nasty ones, despite using lashing of bio oil. I am quite chubby and 60, and not a single stretch mark. I think it is genetic- either you do, or don't- no magic oil with make much difference. Bonne chance.

Maybe do what some of the stars and very rich people do - have the baby induced a month early to avoid them ( - any doctor who agrees to induce early on those grounds should be struck off imho).

It's true that something you put on top of your skin won't do much to help something that's happening from the inside. However, my skin became very dry and irritated due to all the hormones, and my prune oil seems to be the least toxic way of keeping it comfortable and healthy-looking, since I apparently wasn't blessed with genetically-superior self-moisturizing skin. Also with all the crazy things happening to my body, it feels good to pamper myself, and spending 25 francs once every few months isn't so scandalous. My mother had no marks after four children, my sister none after 3 including a set of twins, but I'm not leaving anything to chance as I'm twenty years older than they were when they had their kids!

Someone told me today that surgery for very bad cases of excess loose skin after pregnancy is covered by Swiss insurance, but that sounds too good to be true!

Absolutely - if you find any product that helps, this is wonderful. Was just saying it didn't exist 'in my day'. You might be right though, age might well have something to do with this. I was 22 when I had my first, and 25 for second. Whereas my daughter was 35 for first, and 37 for second. Mind you, my mum never had any, and she was 38 when I was born.

As said, bonne chance.
