Best Swiss wine?

Always getting the chasselas and was wondering whether there's something (much) better to drink that is Swiss - both red and white recommendations appreciated!

Uff! How long is a piece of string? I suppose it depends on your taste, Slammer for one likes the rougher red sold in a tetrapac for 2 E ́s a tanker, great with pasta. So my advise is to try them all and keep the labels of those you like.

Some of the Pinot Noir from Grisons is considered the best the Swiss have, look at Gantenbein but you're looing at around Chf 120.-- bottlle. Studach is similar, not quite as well finished as Gantenbein, around Chf 60.-- bottle

Some of the wine from Valais is good, they changed their attitude to wine production well before anybody else in Switzerland to concentrate on speciallities and quality rather than quantity

I like most of the wines from the Zürich Staatskellerei. You can buy them at the winery or at the Mövenpick wine shops (they own the winery these days)

Humagne rouge is the only Swiss red I enjoy. Couldn't name a specific winery, but I've never had a bad one.

You genuinely like the Zurich wines? I bought a box of the Staatsschreiber Raeuschling at Moevenpick once... I found it so sub-standard that I used the bottles as presents for Swiss friends who appreciate it based on the lable alone. The Graubuenden wines are even more overrated.

Just hop over the Swiss border in literally any direction and get better ones. For whites will the Staatsweingut Meersburg at lake Constance beat the Zurich one on every single product> https://staatsweingut-meersburg.de/

To the West is the Alsace the obvious choice.

The only Swiss wines I really enjoy are some Merlots from Ticino. But then again are the ones in Northern Italy at least on par, often better at a lower price.

Agree! Compleo Cuvee Noire is very good. Although the older vintages were better, the latest vintage is a bit sweet. Its exclusive to Movenpick, but there is something similar in Coop - Dénuo Cuvée Noire

Another red I like is from St Jordern Kellerei. Its called Mitra and is a mix of Pinot Noir and Gamay. Its harder to get. The vineyard sell other wines through Coop but this mix is not easy to get hold of.

For white, anything from Mont Sur Rolle is going to be good.

I like the Fondant and Johannisberg Swiss grapes. Its wine thats nearly fizzy but not quite.

Baccarat from Cave Geneve is a good well priced champagne. Available in Coop on Manor

Fondant or Fendant if you prefer is just Chasselas made in Valais !

I personally like red wines from Valais, those who have metal closing (like the wine exported to the US) instead of wood "bouchon"

the metal closing can be opened easily and the wine don't have the bitterness that lots of red wine have.

We had wine from Klosterhof in a restaurant and were sufficiently impressed to go to the vineyard and buy direct.

Initially disappointed with it, turns out it was a little young so we left it alone for a year or so, went back to it and it was fantastic.

As Slammer first mentioned, how long is a piece of string ?

What wine do you like, red, white or rose ? Whats your budget ?

Wine for Apero, with a meal, just for 2 or for a large group or family ?

To keep Swiss, here is a link for the Grand Pris du Vine Suisse for last year. And mixed in with the many Valais wines, there are 3 from kanton ZH !!

But .... You are LUCKY, on 25 June .....

Zurich wein from local vineyards. Plenty to sample. Latest count is 38 local vineyards - Event is called - Zürcher wein Goin' Downtown.

Cheers ... or should be Prost.

I'd suggest setting aside the idea of a "best" Swiss wine and simply enjoy the process of finding and trying some of the most unique and interesting wines available here.

With the wide variety of the grapes produced and the many small, local vineyards, the options are extensive. Switzerland has also produced several artificially crossed grape varieties that I've never seen grown/sold elsewhere. There are also many assemblages/blends to be tried that will be uniquely Swiss.

As an easy to find an alternative to the Chasselas/Fendant, you might want to try a Valais produced Petite Arvine. It's a white grape variety native to Switzerland.

To start, you can just pick something in your price range and see what you think.

Bertrand Favre from Domaine du Miolan has been organic for the last 20 years, long before it became trendy. His wine is worth some top French wines and the guy is a real gentleman, passionate about his wine: https://domainedemiolan.ch/vins/velours-noir/ The Velours Noir (red) will remind you some of the top quality South African wine if that's your taste. Of course they deliver within CH.

I am QUITE partial to Petite Arvine, indeed!

"Bitterness"? Because you expect red wine to taste like sugar?

When people say the best wine, if you're happy with something for CHF 5 from Aldi rather than a CHF 200 bottle then you're winning. Even if you're a billionaire as it's easier to buy, there's more supply etc. For me there's rarely a best wine, just a good one for the moment depending on what you're eating, your mood, the weather etc.

Some good suggestions above, I'd add some of the Vaudois / La Côte red wines, you can get some interesting Pinots, Gamays etc. The problem - and I can almost hear my permit being torn up - is the price: whatever you can find in Switzerland you can probably find something better/cheaper from abroad.

Have a taste of all the variety and see what you like, with all the microclimates Switzerland has a surprising variety of wines.

Unique Chardonnay Y Malans if you want white ~65CHF

Valais Mundi Electus 2010 if you want complex red ~190CHF

In my humble opinion there 's no good swiss wine below ~60CHF, so better head for another country. Even French are cheaper than Swiss wines...sorry.

If you've been unable to find a great Swiss wine under 60 CHF, then you are more worried about price labels than being a connoisseur.

Do you really believe this crap ?

Don't let the secret out, please
