Buying from Ali Express

Ah, a new trend
My last purchase, ten LED bulbs for the price of one

Let us know how long they last!

I am 83, so I may not be able to answer this.

Did you not consider that the Autosol metal polish is fake?

There are certain things I wouldn’t buy at Ali Express - anything used on the body (razors etc, toothbrushes etc) and any chemicals.

I needed a speaker for my PC monitor, both Logitech at Digitec, really mediocre sound with loud bang on power on, bought SONY at digitec, okeyish sound but horrible smell of the plastic, I kept it for about 2 months hoping the smell will go off, mistake… then I bought 10$ (instead of over 100 chf) cheap speakers on aliexpress, excellent sound quality, voice was crystal clear, no smell, but… a max volume ad jingle at every boot (power up), bought another one on ali, same experience, tried to search “not annoying PC speaker for european market” to no avail, finally I gave up, using only headphones, but the aftermath is:

  • lost ~20 on aliexpress
  • lost ~150 on digitec

Why didn’t you ask digitec for a refund? They guarantee their goods.

Was it some kind of wireless speaker? You might try googling to see if someone managed to fix this. It might have an app which allows you to disable startup sounds. Often, they have a small operating system on there and you can hack them by deleting the startup sound file. Someone might have done this already and posted instructions.

There is only one metal polish cream…Wenol. This silver trivet is almost 100 years old and has been used on every festive family table for that long. I just polished it up for the holidays with Wenol–made in Germany. It leaves a protective coating, so you can’t use it on food surfaces (so not on flatware, e.g.) but for everything else it’s wizard

That’s why the total loss was less than the purchase price, nonetheless on the first item I lost 10% plus shipping fee, on the second 50% to re-sell it (past the 30 days return window)

both had BT, but I wanted to use them with headphone jack to avoid any unnecessary pairing. HDMI cable transmit both Video+Audio by default, the monitor doesn’t have speakers but has an audio jack.

No, these are not that advanced to have an OS. I even opened both of them looking if I can replace the board with simple ~5$ amplifier board but it’s next to impossible to find a replacement board to fit inside, yet also manage to attach existing volume knob and power buttons (one has digital volume knob, other has + and - buttons). In theory I could design my own board, solder it, but… I don’t want the hassle, at least not now so the speakers are in my drawer

30 day return window? Are you sure? I returned a DAB radio that stopped working after about 8 months. I thought all on-line purchases in CH had a 24 month guarantee.

looks real to me. but alot of chinese writing on it.

I think that’s the idea of fakes.

The problem with chemical mixes though is you have no idea if the materials used are toxic to you, or will damage whatever metal you are polishing.

Genuine Autosol products are only manufactured in Germany.
The Ali-Express ones (and there are several), state that the manufacturing places are in China.

You can of course get locally made products for the home market in Asian countries which may be of lesser, or different quality but they are not counterfeit.

The one I bought says made in Germany.

It says “Product of Germany” on the tube.

That’s alright then. It must have been made in Germany.

Silly me for thinking otherwise.

This “Odlo” jacket is CHF 17 from Temu:

If anyone believes this isn’t a fake then they are more gullible than one could imagine.

Real, similar style Odlo jackets start from around CHF200 and go up to around CHF450.

(But it says Odlo on it exclaims omtatsat!)

It may actually be a good jacket (from the same factory). Or not.

BUT: customs may immediately confiscate it and report you to the Odlo lawyers, who will promptly send you a letter and a 700 CHF bill.

The thing with trademarks is: you have to defend them. And defend they usually do.

I never heard about this brand, I wouldn’t buy it because of the logo, because it exactly looks like something worth 20$. Actually I have a softshell, bought in EU for ~20$, really good quality, but thankfully it has no logo at all

Yes, but the companies should also obey Swiss law. Such bills are generally not allowed unless you are reselling in which the case the penalties can be much higher: Gefälschte Markenware bestellt: das droht beim Zoll– Musterbrief | Beobachter.
There was an old thread dealing with this topic. Most buyers know exactly that they are buying fakes. It adds to the excitement. Inspection of every parcel is not not practical. I am sure that the laws concerning on line selling sites are under review at the moment. The easy answer is to buy no-name articles. They are often just as good as the over-priced branded goods. An iron on label does the job wonderfully.

I have a jacket from a C&A Schlussverkauf in Germany that was reduced in price multiple times (bought 10 or more years ago) - for the pricely sum of 9 €

Does not look cheap at all. Could probably be selling for 90 or 139 here.

It only gets light use every year, so it’s still good.

My Löffler bike jacket from sometime around Y2K is still doing its job, even after the zipper being torn up and down for probably thousands of times, in wind, ice, rain. With a backpack.
I doubt the C&A jacket would have survived that kind of (ab)use.
