Canada goose coats - any good? Where to buy?

I have a down coat which I bough at Manor a few years ago and it is very warm. I have worn it in the mountains.

If not in the moutains, I prefer layers by wearing a fleece under a thinner jacket.

from the conversation I guess there is no possibility to get a canada goose for a price below street level?

Auction sites, perhaps. Otherwise, probably not.

That should be plucking research, surely.

Now that that questionable necessity and virtues of a Canada Goose jacket have been clawed part, anyone up for this? If your jacket isn't warm enough at least bed will be

Swiss production...

I believe the list price is round about 2800sfr, not including the household help to handle the laundering process

They aren't made to be "elegant" but to protect you in extreme conditions. Such conditions will never be found in the streets of *insert any swiss city here* so I'm surprised people buy them at all here!

However given their cost they are a bit a of a status-symbol so maybe thats the answer to my question.

A few years back it was Moncler - it is currently Canada Goose. Fashions change.

Now, anyone know when elasticated waist slacks will be coming back into fashion??

True. A few years ago I was just a bloke with a nice warm coat. This year, I'm a fashion sheep and next year I'll be mutton trying to dress as lamb in last year's fashion.

Whereas I'm just too tight to replace a coat that still got plenty of wear in it.

Funny after seeing this thread saw one for the first time - stood next to someone on the tram.

I won't be rushing out to buy one - he was clearly way too hot, each time the tram paused for traffic he looked more and more unhappy! And the fur hood trim looks far to girly for a man's jacket.

That`s the point. That and the rosie cheeks.

I`m wearing a pair right now.

There was a programme on the radio (DRS 1 probably a podcast available) a couple of days ago about down. They said it was like tropical hardwood, every seller has a certificate but where it comes from no-one knows.

The only traceable source was used by H&M of all people. I was only listening to it with one ear as I am happy with my manmade fibres that I can wash in the machine and dries quickly if you get caught short.

Why do you think there is a contradiction?

I got mine years ago and it wears incredibly well. For somebody who has no time to think much about layering and whatnot, throwing it quickly on only a tshirt and run wherever I need to immediately counts for a lot. We take students to mountains, too, it's a great thing to have when staying outdoors the entire day. Or travelling around, temps changing from Syberian to La Cote - super practical. And my kid just uses it as a comforter to crash on when sleepy on long train rides.

I guess I couldn't care less for momentary fashion fever, I think it is a bit of an iconic piece these days but this thing actually is a great quality companion. No stains, no down shedding, parkas look good if you get appropriate size and fasten on the sides. I wouldn't get the short bomber CG, if one pays already so much - get a long one. I think people tend to diss pricey things, in general. These jackets are cool since they serve magnificenly well. (To one slim super busy girl, at least, voila).

I just threw an ice-skating party for kids and was glad to have it on. Not that one can't live without it, but yay for CG. I could, of course, also walk around in some sheep skin, too, or more ethical less warm stuff. But hey..the fact one looks like an expeditionist, who cares.

I have one (expedition - black) although I use it for Chicago winters in which every other jacket seems to perform quite poorly against -20C with a windchill that will make the water in your eyes freeze.

One thing to note - there are a lot of options to buy different types of Canada Goose jackets or coats. Some seem to offer very good protection others seem to be a little more stylish. The only one worth considering for me was the expedition as I planned using only in very cold temps. If you plan on buying the expedition, be aware that it is quite heavy and it is very very warm. If I was to wear this coat when its -5-10C outside, you'll be too warm. But I guess to each his own, some people feel the cold more than others. Also if you buy the expedition buy at least one size smaller ( I am usually an M and I bought an S, even then it seemed too big).

I got mine from amazon in the US and shopped around until I found a reasonable deal (276 USD w/o tax included). (Yes its not a fake and its brand new) there are deals like this out there but you would obviously need someone in the US to receive your order then send it over or take it with you the next time you visit.

Just a side note: Be aware that there also some chinese goose fakes in the market and you may encounter them if you shop with an online provider. (You can find videos on how to spot them on youtube) This prompted me to stick to Amazon when looking to buy the coat.

I'll just wait for them to start appearing in the EF For Sale or For Free section.

I find it too hot to wear Canada Goose jackets in the mittelland, and a blazer is enough to do the job for me. People here are in winter jackets, and I am in a blazer. I'm getting flashbacks of jackets and shorts and flip-flops in under -20 C. But if you dash from one warm place to another, and don't spend much time outside, a t-shirt and the jacket is a good combination, or just a couple of layers.

The first thing I did when I bought my jacket was to remove the logo. I can't be bothered to be a banner, even for an "exclusive" brand such as Canada Goose (is it really exclusive?). There were not marks left after the removal.

I bought mine in autumn 2013 whilst on a weekend trip to Amsterdam, the 9 streets area had a cool shop and there was a decent sale on. In the end I paid around 500euros for a "Langford parka" (which retails in Zurich for just over 1000chf).

I know friends who have owned good quality parkas for nearly 10 years, so maybe worth checking for a second hand shop, or second hand item online, waiting for one to appear on EF doesn't really seem logical. Also I don't think that would happen so easily as a good parka lasts ages and people wouldn't sell them as once they have hit 10 years of wear as they might be on their way out.

I had to smile. Welcome to Switzerland and conformity. They say there is a strong pressure to conform here, and looking at people's fashion choices in Zurich, you can see it (especially compared with other European cities where Style is more individual).

I remember buying my first ever coat to go over a suit when I arrived in CH in deepest winter. I figured I'd get a lot of use, and didn't have the time/knowledge to shop online or cross border, so got a Boss, probably from Globus Herren.

Imagine my surprise when I went to the coat rack my first time in a bar or restaurant (in central Zurich) and found all the men's coats were the same cut, colour, and brand as mine. Luckily my scarf was tucked in the sleeve to help me identify it!

At first it didn't bother me too much being Same-Same (and oddly, looking back now, a 'uniform' item like this was comforting as it helped me feel like I fitted in, when I completely Fish Out Of Water on arrival from a place like Sydney where no one owns a real coat). Strange as it sounds (even to me, who generally doesn't care about such things)

My next coat was from Germany (store named COS, the high end brand of H&M I think). I must say it then felt really good to stand out and have some style and individuality again.

The savings are staggering sometimes. I was in rural Germany a month back and paying full price, I bought a brand name suit and coat for the price of a suit in Zurich.

I had an impression that almost everyone wears Jack(ass) Wolf-skin(me) coats here.

On sale this week on https://www.my-store.ch

Happy shopping.
