Cheapest Pint - Zurich

I have 4 friends coming over this Friday and I was wondering if anybody knows a place where you can get the cheapest beer? It's just that i've friends coming from out of Switzerland and the prices for them will be crazy!! The weather isn't looking too promising to go drink by the lake!

Denner

+1

Less than 20.- for a slab of 24 Budvar or Löwenbräu

Just bought a fridge for the balcony for the summer (apparently there is one) and is fully stocked with the latter. My very first fridge, dedicated to beer only.

Nice one!

And for pubs? After we wet the whistles!?

If you call Feldschlösschen beer, then I've seen a few places offerring it at around 6 francs for a Gross (0.5L).

but to me thats not really beer... so im happy to pay an extra franc elsewhere to get something that tastes like beer.

Well there is Paddy Reilly's, Nelsons, Kennedy's, Talacker (round the corner from Paddy's.

Most pints range 8.20 - 9.50 though I think, with Feldschlossen (sic?!) being the cheapest.

Best bang for your buck is the black cans of Doppio Malto you can find in Denner at about 1.10 a can - which sounds steep but is 8.8% alcohol. It is pretty awful but it got me through the winter when I was unemployed and living in a WG, mixed in with a bit of Panache or lime/lemon to take the bite off a bit.

If you can't stand that stuff (and nobody will blame you), the next best is probably Prix Garantie from Coop. For cheap beer it's really not that bad.

I think Xenix is around CHF6 for a large beer.

It has a good outdoor scene in summer and the beer is from the Paul brewery which is local and quite acceptable.

You'll also be close to other bars in Langstrasse if you need a change of scene. La Catrina is quite good fun later and has Mexican bottled beers at reasonable prices.

Here is cool too, if weather is decent

That's cheaper than 3chufs a glass.

I must admit, I tend to drink Landi's Farmer beer, more often than not, at home.

10chufs buys 20, or 5,90 for 10, if they don't have the 20's.

Not as good as Budvar, but not crap either - and 4,8%.

Yep, pretty common for teenagers to buy some beers, and then hang out in front of the Denner.

I'm more sophisticated, I take it the 50m to my garages before drinking it!

Bloody Italians, , the German kids here can't afford to drink, they got to Basel for vandalism (during the footie season)

the output from the Paul brewery is a good recommendation

If you don't see Paul on draft, you can often find it in bottles. Paul 01 is the lager.

Decent draft beers in Zürich: Paul, Turbinenbräu, Appenzeller

To be avoided: Feldschlössen, Calanda, Amboss, Hürlimann

Other people will, of course, have other opinions.

Nothing wrong with Hurlimann.

I like an Erdinger myself

I agree about Erdinger, but then we're getting into weizenbier rather than standard lagers.

I was drinking Hurlimann last night . . . just hasn't got a nice clean taste.

Denner. LöwenWeisse Hefeweiss. 1.25 a can. Can't go wrong.

Along the Limmat (opposite Limmatplatz) there are a few little bars that set up in the summer at the Oberletten........ weather permitting, these places are great.

In particular there is a little bar called the "Tram Stop" or something (it's in an old tram), and as I remember:

a) it's cheap (for Zurich), and

b) NOT Feld'scheissen'

As I said, it is outside though, but I did think that a "Cheap Pint in Zurich" thread would be much shorter than this one.

Ahhh yes, but it does have a good old habit of grabbing you by the nuts and getting you wasted fairly quickly.
