Little Rufus has Chickenpox (or nuggets, as she calls it) and is utterly miserable. I've got the soothing gel and paracetamol and piriton and we're doing the oaty baths. Do any of you have any other remedies to help soothe blistered skin?
Thank you in advance,
Rufus
Bollox. Could someone correct my thread title please. Am all thumbs today.
Sorry to hear. I hope she’s doing ok. I had it as a child and still remember the misery. How old is she? Is Benadryl available easily here? Something to help her sleep through it if possible might be welcome.
Sanex creme bath was a life saver when my ex had chicken pox in his mid 20s.
From the Boots website:
Sanex Dermo Sensitive bath cream is specifically developed for sensitive skin. It contains lactoserum, an ingredient rich in milk proteins to help leave your skin feeling comfortable & soft. Dermatologically tested.
When we had chicken pox as kids, my mum made us wear mittens most of the time. That way we could rub the itchy spots for a bit of relief, but without scratching/breaking the skin with fingernails and making it worse. Even soft cotton gloves or clean cotton socks might do the trick. Washing clothes, linens, and mittens frequently is also a good idea, but without heavily scented products.
My mother gave us paint brushes so that we could 'paint' our own spots. The idea was that a bit of a distraction, plus a sense of control, helps children deal with the misery a bit better. Bright pink calamine lotion, well suited to childish artists, was the go-to remedy way back when - but paint brushes could be used to apply any lotion, creme, or similar remedy.
And ice cream. Ice cream cures everything.
Hope your little one starts feeling better soon. It's a tough time, for both of you.
Yep she's entirely up to date. Kids aren't routinely vaccinated against the chickenpox virus in the UK, dunno about CH. But thanks for the quiet censure. I'm all for herd immunity.
It’s not on the routine schedule here either, it’s available so parents can choose to vaccinate if they want to and is recommended if a child hasn’t caught it naturally by the age of about 12.
Yes, lukewarm bath, about a 1/4 Cup Bicarb to a full bath of water. (Got them at about 16 or so. Passed it on to my sister who is 2 years older. It took about a decade before she forgave me.)
EDIT: And, of course, ice cream as a follow up treatment.
