I confess I haven't really looked hard myself, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me of a coffee place like Starbucks--
Armchairs and couches, large espresso drinks (not the tiny shots served in tea houses), pastries and a staff that doesn't mind if you're there for a few hours reading or something
There are at least three Starbucks in Geneva, one at the Plainpalais tram stop, one on Quai des Bergues (rive droite, by the Pont de la Machine) and one at the railway station end of Rue de Mont Blanc (next to the H&M in the pedestrian part).
I like Le Pain Quotidien, boulevard Helvétique 21. It's not really like Starbucks. They don't have huge beverages, but it's just a nice place have a coffee and to hang out for a bit.
What's wrong with McCafe? The coffee and snacks are just as good as Starbucks (in my eyes), it's cheaper than Starbucks, chairs are comfortable, no-one minds if you're there a long time... and staff are much better than the Starbucks people at drawing pretty patterns with the caramel on top of my caramel lattes!
My friends just opened a cafe in geneva which is just what you are after. The coffee is as good as you'd find in Melbourne (one of the owners is an aussie), and everyone speaks english:
