Desert Island Discs

If you were stranded on a desert island (here's the link for people who don't know about this great BBC Radio 4 program: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/...nddiscs.shtml)) , what 8 songs, book and luxury item whould you take?

As a starter, here's a possible collection of 8 from me (but could be a completely different collection tomorrow )

Lazy - Deep Purple (version from Made in Japan)

Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin (Led Zep III)

Imagine - John Lennon (Imagine)

Heart of Gold - Neil Young (Harvest)

I'm So Tired - The Beatles (White Album)

Star Star - The Rolling Stones (Goats Head Soup)

Crossroads - Cream (Wheels of Fire)

Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Creedance Clearwater Revival (Pendulum)

As I'm a biologist and I'd be living on an island, my book would be "The song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinction" by David Quammen.

And my luxury would be ... my other half

What a fantastic programme and a great thread....

Going to California - Led Zep

Lagos - Zachary Breaux

Superstition - Stevey Ray Vaughn

Jails & Bombs - Amos Lee

Blackbird - Beatles

Thanks for the Pepperoni - George Harrison

Little Wing - Jimmi Hendrix

I hope our desert islands aren't too far apart Mike, cos I wanna swimm across and borrow your discs - some great choices in there!

Yours too! - as you said, mine will change tomorrow also - maybe we'll end up on the same island to swap tracks.

Check out Zachary Breaux if you can find him. I saw him live at Ronnie Scotts in London in mid '80s, that gig was his first album ("Groovin" and best) he recorded 2 others and was then killed in a car crash aged 30. he would have been one of the best jazz/funk/blues guitarists around today. Got lagos on my iTunes right now!

gg - Did you happen to see Amos Lee when he was in Zurich? Eliz and I missed this one and I am still kicking myself!

-fduvall

I didn't even know he was playing! I heard he was supporting Bob Dylan on part of his tour, was it then he was in Zurich? I did see him do a 30 minute gig at Ronnie Scotts in London a year or 2 ago, it was a music press demo paid for by his publishers and somehow I got a free invite - he was good although seemed pretty overawed by the whole thing, seems quite a shy guy. He was in London for a couple of gigs in Cambden Town that I couldn't get to.

Next time he's in Europe I'll certainly make the effort

Pink Floyd : Shine on you crazy diamonds

Mendelssohn : Fingals Cave (Hebridean Overture)

Undertones : Teenage kicks

Stones : You cant always get what you want

Soggy Bottom Boys : Man of constant sorrow

Steve Harley : Make me smile

Van Morrison : It stoned me

Coldplay : Fix you

Stone Roses : I wanna be adored

Chilli Peppers : Californication

Book : Neal Stephenson - The Baroque Cycle

Luxury Item - Marlboro Lights

Put some serious thought into that .... now going to find some links for above ....

Ahhh, good to see this thread resurected ...

Here are my choices for today:

seriously, thanks for spotting that ... my fave tune too, hence it is top of my list ...

SONGS

These would change by the minute, let alone the day...but here goes....

I Feel Fine - The Beatles

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

My Old School - Steely Dan

Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart - Randy Travis

Across the Universe - The Beatles

There Ain't no Pleasin' You - Chas & Dave

Give it Up - Hothouse Flowers

Fairytale of New York - The Pogues

BOOK

I'll confess to not reading a great number of books. The last one I read which really gave me that "can't put it down" feeling was

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, so I guess I would go with that if whacking great huge encyclopedias are out of the question

LUXURY

A piano... I'd be able to dedicate myself to learning how to play one

Great idea for a thread. I remember when I used to do the odd music quiz that one idea for a round I had was to list a number of celebrities against a number of songs and invite the participants to correctly identify which celebrity had selected the song. But I could never find anything on the Net that listed all the songs chosen by all those who had appeared. I used to think it would have been a great resource if someone had done that...I don't know if anybody's done it since. I'm surprised Channel 4 haven't devoted a whole evening towards a countdown of the top 100 songs selected on Desert Island Discs

thanks for reminding me of this top band .... haven't heard them in years ... saw them at the Barras (same week saw Cranberries & Crashtest Dummies) .... now popping off to Amazon ....

For those who have not listened to this classic programme here's the link

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/...anddiscs.shtml

the show returns Sunday May 13th with actress Joanna Lumley, the shows used to be repeated 9am the following Fridays too.

We always "played" this as full albums, hence Desert Island Discs ...

My choices at the moment are:

2000+Joseph Arthur: Come To Where I Am From

1990+Counting Crows: August and Everything After

1980+Van Morrison: Poetic Champions Compose

1970+Pink Floyd: Animals

These picks change all the time...

At the risk of sounding "uppity" I'd say I'll take any Bach with me cause I can never get tired of it even after listening to it 500 times. If I had room, I'll put in some Brahms as well.

In no particular order....

Pink Floyd - Shine on your crazy Diamond followed closely by Wish you were here

Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees

Muse - Citizen Erased

Paul Weller - Wild Wood

The Beatles - A day in the life

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watch Tower

Doves - Catch the Sun

Greeday - Good Riddance

Oasis - Live Forever

The Verve - Sonnet

They Might be Giants - Birdhouse in your soul

the list could go on but I'll stop there

Puccini always gets me going...but I might be a classical lightweight.

Motorcycle Emptiness - the manic street preachers

Head On - the Jesus and Mary Chain

Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode

Stinkin Thinkin - the Happy Mondays

Daybreak - The Stone Roses

God Only Knows - the beach boys

LSD - the Beatles

Gone - U2

From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea - the Cure

Kashmir - Led Zep
