Sad news indeed.
Dolly seemed like a truly good person. Kind, funny, and generous. Never forgot her roots. I admired her Imagination Library, a literacy program for children in the (still poverty stricken) area she grew up in. A remarkable lady.
Perhaps my favorite performance was from the 90s, on the Letterman show, where she, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmy Lou Harris sang a sublime version of âAfter The Gold Rushâ:

It is very sad and I really liked her but that is a bit over the top in my opinion.
And completely against practice and etiquette.
Who can order it
Half-staff is not a matter of local mood. Under the U.S. Flag Code, the order comes from specific offices:
- The President orders flags to half-staff on federal property nationwide, typically on the death of present or former government officials, foreign dignitaries, or in the wake of national tragedies.
I suppose he could argue National Tragedy, but everyone knows he is the National Tragedy.

Yeah, in the same way at the world cup they had to photoshop him out of the celebration photos, I could imagine him trying to take the limelight at her funeral too.

Prez Trump was only 6 months younger than Ms. Parton at the day of her untimely demise.
My first reaction was similar - a bit OTT.
But then I thought about it.
Through her music, her acting, and the way she lived life on her own terms, Dolly led by example.
She embodied much that is good in the world.
She promoted the intrinsic value of education, the need for empathy. She supported womenâs rights and agency, supported the LGBTQ community, promoted care and support for those who were less fortunate, especially communities systematically âleft behindâ, provided disadvantaged young people access to music in her local public schools, donated a million to the development of the COVID vaccine and then made a PSA encouraging everyone to get vaccinatedâŚ
Many in positions of political, cultural, or economic infuence today could benefit from her example. The contrast to todayâs âempathy is weak, greed is goodâ mantra canât be missed. In fact, the irony is a tad delicious.
So while Trump probably didnât have any of that in mind while making the proclamation, still a pretty good use of the capitol flagpole, methinks.

It is not a criticism of Dolly Partonâs life or legacy, its a criticism of the scale of the state honour. Neil Armstrong who was arguably one of the most consequential Americans, inspiring tens of millions of school kids received a one day honour.
Its meaningful because it is using sparingly, and yet with his usual gaudy corruption heâs made it the longest commemeration in US history, after the 9-11 families.Incidentally I just checked and his pals Lindsey Graham got 5 days and Charlie Kirk 4 days.

Oh I agree that she deserves the recognition but a whole week is taking it over the top.
A national day of mourning for her would have conveyed the same message.
