Dr Who TV series

There’s a story arc over the series, though, which binds it together. I quite liked that.

Well no, the very fact of the weak special effects may have been part of its charm, but the stories, while never supposed to be believable (this is science-fiction after all) had time to develop and were at least consistent within their own little bubble. Some of the more recent ones just have a Deus ex Machina element, with no attempt to explain the hows or whys of the situation they find themselves dropped into each episode. And the better special effects do nothing to alleviate that, being nothing more than an expensive distraction that occupies most of the programming time.

Some of the Dr.Who episodes gave me nightmares also. I think the worst was one with giant trifids or something similar, where this green goo (I think they used green bubble wrap as special effects) was infectious. Had me frightened at the time.

The Weeping Angels episode gave me the willies, and that wasn’t so long ago so I was old enough to be rational but OH MY GOD DON’T BLINK!!

I was so scared by Dr Who as a kid I used to hide behind the sofa when my family watched it and I have never been able to watch it as an adult.
It’s just not my thing at all.

Sounds like a combination of The Seeds of Doom (plant infection, giant vegetation)
and The Green Death (giant maggots and glowing green slime).

My Giant Ants were in a 1965 story called The Web Planet. I was five at that time, so not surprising that I shouold be literally hiding behind the settee.

Yep, those would be it. Guess they have merged in my childhood memories. Loved the Darleks though, they were kinda cute.
