Emigration to New Zealand

Time is approaching to start thinking where to migrate to an english speaking and warm place, and New Zealand seems a very attractive choice, considering they seem to have incentives to attract IT specialists, so migration process seems doable (unlike usa unfortunately)…I would be very interested to hear from people who lived there, how do you compare it to life here in switzerland? all points that you find important will be glad to here
P.S. i am in my mid 30s, no family

Is NZ warm???

It depends when you go.

Pretty similar to the UK no? Maybe a couple of degrees warmer.

You might be better off looking at OZ if you want a warm climate.

Pretty much. It’s a temperate climate so if the OP is looking for year round warm weather and sunshine it’s probably not the place for him.

NZ still seems warm compared to Canada :slightly_smiling_face:

I used to think about NZ too, but it was too late. OP, property prices in NZ are skyrocketing, so what is your future there?

Yup. Real estate market is apparently completely shot. Can’t imagine a big job market there.
It’s an holiday destination and doomsday bunker location for the rich.

Really research IT job opportunities there, first. There are a number of highly skilled IT people in NZ. NZ has much lower IT opportunities than out here in the western world. Main IT areas are Auckland and Wellington. wellington is COLD, specially with the south westerlies from antartica. Housing is very low quality and expensive, unless it’s a new build. New builds are still substantially ‘lower’ standard than EU/CH/US(?). I know of many companies here in CH/EU that are hiring remote IT people from NZ (late night work given time difference, much cheaper cost of labour, etc). People can be nice welcoming, specially if you choose to ‘fit in and not rock the boat’. Cost of living is very high, specially compared to income. Traffic is horrible. Public transport is not reliable for everyday use. Car is needed. It’s a nice place to visit and perhaps even set up a business in tourism, agriculture business (they recently enforced belching-cow tax for cattle/dairy farmers :).

National health care in NZ is not all it is cracked up to be. They have limited number of medical professionals and medication provided through NHS. Private care, while available, is expensive.

Lot’s of kiwis leave middle earth for a better future/job/opportunities to australia, middle east, UK and Europe. Many eventually go back and settle down in middle earth later in their years.

If you are willing to take step backk 10+ years, fully dive fully into the attitude ‘awww, she’ll be arright’ and live that life, then it’s for you … it’s a known fact that roads 3 kms either direction of a Macdonalds is littered with mcdonalds trash … even though NZ very seriously and actively encourages recycling …

Australia might be a better option, specially if you are in IT. Australia also has it’s number of IT people. It’ll be competitive.

There is a lot of marketing in NZ, without that actual delivery. The legal system there is wishy-washy.

For positive aspects of NZ, please google search.

All the best!

Have you considered Malta

Otherwise India

Thanks for the input, i looked up that temperatures in winter higher than 10C in Auckland, so that’s good for me. I got really attracted how green NZ and i adore hiking and beaches, i also think smaller islands have more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, people are not neurotic. So ideally would be to have peaceful existence, but yet in developed/urban environment (so 10 minute walk doesn’t lead to a cow farm like here) with warm temperatures. Housing prices are of less interest, because i cannot buy anything anyway, just wanted to experience 5-10 years of warmth until i retire completely back home close to north pole, ultimate dream would be to live in florida…but yeah getting into usa is difficult. Australia is also for consideration, just immigration processes are more difficult there.

i can’t get if you are trolling me with India  that’s the last place on earth i would choose for anything, and even then will not choose

Like the UK, New Zealand experiences a maritime climate so a strong wind on a warm day can make it feel much colder.
Wellington is incredibly winter.

NZ is long and thin - the North of the North Island is warmer than the UK, on average but the South of the South Island is colder.

The Hiking in New Zealand is bloody fantastic.
Beaches too.

Having said that, I found that Dunedin, down in the South, felt like it was at the edge of the world.

You said someplace warm and English speaking.

Please share the website! I’m curious about other places around the world

OP, why NZ? I’d rather emigrate to Australia.

London and Auckland win!

Nah, too many Aussies. Kiwis are much friendlier.

I applied to emigrate to NZ about 15 years ago, completed all the forms, had a medical with my wife and kids, and got accepted. [I am Working in IT].

But decided to stay here at the last minute when I got a local job offer.

That Christmas, there was a big earthquake there, Feb 2011. NZ is on a fault line like San Francisco and unlike SF 90% of the residential buildings are made of wood. We would have just arrived if I had taken them up on the offer. The earthquake killed 145 people, and did a lot of damage. Serendipity that we stayed here.
