Halal Food in Zurich

Just a quick enquiry if anyone knows of a local (Zurich) butcher or shop preparing and selling halal food?

Please keep in mind this is for someone with uber-limited German

Thanks

A Muslim friend of mine buys his meat from his local Masjid if this helps as it guarantees that the animal is slaughtered according to Halal specifications.

A lesser reliable source is to get from Turkish shops. Hope this helps.

There is a Turkish butcher in Josefstrase (off Langestrasse) that sell all manner of Halal meat. I buy from there most times. At the end of the Nr. 7 tram line (Morgental end) there is also a Halal butcher. I buy from this one when I can't get to Josefstr, which is a bit cheaper and has more variety, but both have good quality meat.

En guetä

Thanks guys,

A useful starting point. I will point my friend in the right direction.

Hopefully I can save him from enforced vegetarianism

Much appreciated

At the rate prices are for good meat, enforced vegetarianism seems better on the wallet

There are a few other threads relating to Halal butchers. Do a search with the word Halal. There are more places than just the two I've mentioned.

Kosher City in West strasse 115 has Kosher (asnd therefore Halal) meat - http://www.koschercity.ch . English spoken.

Same goes for "Kol Tuv" in Aemtlerstrasse 8.

I had tried the search thingy, but it didn't bring up anything apart from a thread to do with Ticino. Clearly my natural failings when faced with technology

Thanks for the pointers though

There were 13 hits when I searched for "Halal"

OK... I have now used a broader search and get more hits

I had attempted the common sense approach of starting in the food & drink forum. I was never pretending to be some internet god

If you g to the Islamisches Zentrum on Eisgasse, you'll be able to either buy directly from the Masjid or talk to someone there and make an order (they bring it from a reliable guy in Lausanne). Or, you can try the Turkish shop on Josefstrasse; I also heard he sells Halal meat but I never bought it from there.

There is also a delicious Lebanese restaurant (Al-Mukhtar) right around the Josefstrasse area (sorry don't know the exact street name), but it's really good and cheap!

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any reliable information regarding the availability of halal food in and around Zurich ?

There are many places claiming to offer halal food, but Im not convinced.

For example, does anyone know if `New Point` kebabs are really halal ?

And why don't they display a certificate to substantiate their claim ??

That's one of the mysteries of life, is the kebab halal?

Although, the place on Josephstr is halal and so are their kebabs.

I dont know what New Point is. All halal purveyors must have a certificate to make sure their kitchen is fully halal.

A place on Niederdorf is run by an Egyptian and is Halal - "The Best Snack Bar".

Is this an advertisment for Al Mukhtar ??

I have found no further info about this establishment.

Can you tell us exactly where it is ?

thanks

There is a Halal butchery (Turkish) at Tramendstation Wollishofen, right accross from the Shamrock, and one at Hardplatz (Tramendstation of line 8), and many places and many more.

we go to a shop in (old) Oerlikon, one street away from the Asia Way, just near the Hallenstadion. sorry forgot the name of the street!

hth

I can direct you to a shop but it is in Basel...

If you do the shopping tour (on the social calendar) we go into the one in Josefstrasse that everyone is mentioning. I can recommend the meat regardless of Halal or not - its really good!
