Hidden Chat/Messaging App

A friend of mine has developed an app. Maybe you are interested in

Basically, the app looks like a noteapp but when you enter your private password (you will get it via email after your registration) in the search section, the chat page will appear.

So if somebody does not know the app, will think that is a note app..

You can chat with your friends in a hidden way

This is the WhatsApp replacement I've never been looking for.

I work on the assumption that your "friend" is collecting all the messages in his gmail account.

So your "friend" has all the passwords. Nice.

I’ve just abandoned What’s App and joined Signal. Not only is more private it synchronizes with my iPad.

But it is difficult to quit What’s app. Ironically a google search can give you instructions. (But I still use ddg).

Let's be clear, this is not an alternative to WhatsApp.

There is no indication or assurance of privacy and security. There is just obscurity in hiding an unknown messaging system behind a note-taking front-end.

I'm sorry, but I would not recommend anyone to use such an App.

WhatsApp, Signal, FB Messenger, WeChat and iMessage are enough. There's really no need to use anything else.

I've only ever used FB and Whatsapp when it's been used for Ski School messaging, the others never, but I've never really got my head around why anyone would use them for anything other than large group discussions.

What's wrong with SMS? If you just want to "chat with your friend" surely there's nothing easier or more private?

Looks like it is an app for people that are cheating in a relationship

SMS is the least secure and private and is very poor on features. It is the lowest common denominator of messaging and I'm surprised that anyone would choose it given FB or WA as an alternative.

WA I use to chat to family in particular as they are not tech savvy and it is very easy to use and easy to send and receive photos, voice messages etc. as well as being free compared to international SMS which has various limitations.

Are you referring to the OP’s app, or Signal?

the App being punted in this thread.

Signal is solid, I would take that over Telegram.

and lol at Ace1, Signalling_System_No._7 offers absolutely no guarantee of delivery (certainly no confirmation), no confidentiality, no integrity. I would only use it if I was sticking with T9_(predictive_text)) .

Threema is where the cool kids are, very secure. With nobody to talk to

Features? What features do you need? It's a text message.

It's a good back-up if you need to send a message and neither have wifi or data on your phone (when roaming for example).

I don't get all this security.

My messages are more like "What are we eating for supper tonight?" rather than "The mission is go! I repeat, the mission is go! Rendezvous with the helicopter at 0300 hours."

delivery within a known and solid time is important (SMS can be very variable and I experiences messages arriving days later)

delivery receipt and read receipt is a basic one.

being able to send receive photos/videos to a small family group for free.

ability to type/send the message on a computer attaching documents/photos is another.

If you have a signal to send an SMS, you typically also have signal to send data - esp. once 2G is phased out. but I agree, it can be a back-up.

security is a transparent and free/cheap feature. why make something deliberately insecure when you don't need to?

Threema...

Swiss based and works like a charm!!!

Sounds like the sort of thing someone with something to hide from a significant other would be interested in... It won't be long before Mumsnet et al. become aware of it and then having the "note app" installed will make you look suspicious even if you haven't done anything wrong.

In other news - does anyone remember Trillian from the ICQ and MSN days? The messenger to unite all messengers. It would be fab if there was something like that (there might be, I have not looked) now because what with so many leaving WhatsApp and going in different directions, I now have three different messenger apps on my phone. Thankfully, I have a lot of storage, but it seems a bit redundant. And I won't install Telegram, so if someone chooses to only have that and refuses to still use WhatsApp, they would have to revert to email or text messages. Managing our online group events would also come with the prerequisite of everyone agreeing to install a particular messenger.

why is signal better than TG? just out of interest...also threema is ok but yeah nobody uses it (we were blackmailed into joining it from a family member who is on no social media but that )

Signal and WhatsApp use an implementation of the Signal protocol. It's been audited and is deemed to be good for privacy and security.

Threema is now open source and has been audited too.

Telegram rolled its own protocol (MTProto) and I don't see clear evidence of audits.

All are better than this note-taking/messenging app that is no longer linked here. They are also better than SMS.

People are streaming away from WhatsApp in a kneejerk reaction to their new (delayed) policy to share metadata into Facebook (with exclusions for Europe as GDPR makes this potentially painful for them). They cannot read your messages (in theory) and if you think you're so important and your chats are so secret, you might not be wanting to use the operating systems you currently have on your devices (have a look at https://securephones.io if you want to read more on how your mobile OS is secure and can be less secure). If you were having this kneejerk reaction and still are on Facebook then you are putting the moron into oxy

In short, the best one to use is where your contacts are. Nothing really changed there.

btw, if you worry about Facebook getting your data and stop using WhatsApp, think about the people who have you as contacts in their phones and remain - they are potentially communicating your metadata to Facebook anyway.

thanks that was well explained sensei -one more question if you don't mind...so instead of FB do you recommend another network? I really miss Google+ (was so sad when that was taken away)

I believe most of the main stream messaging services have end to end encryption, meaning no one reads your messages. The problems with What’s app vs Signal is the amount of other information about your device, e-mail address, contacts (from your Contacts app), location, etc. that they collect AND share with google which also collects said data.

Google knows who you are, where you are, where you have been, the web location you came from, the web location you bo to next, what you have bought and possibly posts you have made here.

Encrypted and salted?

There's always a certain level of trust in these things.

Now. How would I do it? A cover app that decrypts/encrypts your favourite messaging app data and executables, and hides the encryption in the noise of an innocuous JPG. No need for a server. The trick would be making a convincing cover app. Hmm. I'd ask Mossad or the Kremlin. They've probably got all that's needed.
