How do you clean your floor when you have a cat?

So since I have been having problems with my cat throwing up, we did investigate the "active" ingredients in some of the household cleaners used for the floor (or otherwise) just to make sure we weren't slowly killing him one mopping/throw-up cleaning at a time.

We found that for sure, this one, is not good for cats. Throwing up is one of the many side effects of its active ingredient(s). And it didn't mention anything about being harmful to animals (unfortunately). We also use this (with the Swiss name--but the product is the same) for our wood floors, and in the precautions, it says "keep out of reach of children and pets"--which I think is mostly for swallowing concerns, but we have stopped using it too just in case.

I would recommend using something like this instead (we have switched to it at least). I haven't been able to find a product here in Switzerland that says, specifically, it is not harmful to animals, but using all natural ingredients helps. I think vinegar (as others have suggested) is also a very good alternative.

You can always search the internet for the active ingredients in a product, along with "harmful to animals" and you will usually find studies on whether it has been tested on animals before or not and what has come from the studies. HTH.

Unfortunately the links take me directly to the leshop homepage...no product in particular. Could you please be more psecific? I am preparing for my lovely baby cat that will arrive in 2 months and I want to make usre everything is perfect for her. Although thinking of it, I have another cat back home who is 13 years old and we never had a problem with floor cleaners...she's fine and dandy so far

This thread made me realize that we must be the dirtiest household in the country.

I doubt it... we have new apartment building projects either side of us... the one in front is coming towards completion but the diggers are just in on the one behind.

I use Ajax too. Never had a problem with sick cats.

You've just reminded me, time for the yearly clean of the kitchen floor...!!! (just kidding)

Sorry... Links are now fixed in the original post (at least for me). Hopefully it works now for you too.

Just get him one of those robotic vacuum cleaners, you'll both be happier..

Our planned weekly regime (two months until kittehs! ) is to hoover twice and mop up with the water/vinegar/essential oil mix mentioned before once. Our apartment will be the "shoes off before entering" variety, so I hope once a week is enough. I mean, these two can't make a mess, can they? Far too cute... (Can't resist adding a cat picture, sorry )

Those cats reminded me of:

keep the cat in a filing cabinet, that's what the cool people do.

Too cute. Love the cat but really want the robot.

Argghhh- brilliant.

ok. so they look EXACTLY like our two when they were little. they are now 1 and 2 years old. good luck because like mine, those two have the devil in their eyes and they will keep that mixture i mentioned flowing due to their plant flipping, water drinking, night crazy madness. so cute and so sweet, but soooo destructive! at this point, we wait until the evening, have a glass and watch them run at high speed from one end of the apartment to the other, knocking over everything in their way. t.v is so boring compared to the antics of cats.

i may add, at one point i got a great essential oil from the bodyshop, it was lemon grass or something like that, mixed with the vinegar and water it was really, really nice for the kitchen.

I do as well. It is called Dyva 2000, you need no chemicals.

once i started having pets and children, i started to "green up" my cleaning approach. i now too use plain vinegar with a few drops of lavender essential oil. i've never done this in switzerland though (just arrived) and have no idea where to find essential oils.

Your pharmacy or health food shop will have them.
