I paid off my car loan --- now what?

I purchased a car from the dealer - they offered me a loan and I have now (about 6months ago) paid it off completely.

When I've done this in the USA they send me the "pink slip" saying I own the car. Do they do that here in switzerland?

I thought I'd ask here first before I asked the finance dept of the car dealership.

No.

Tom

What does your contract say?

I have a vague memory of getting something from them in writing and then sending the grey card to the Strassenvekehrsamt to have the not removed from the card. That was after a lease though.

Of course if the loan was not tied to the car in the way a lease is, there should be nothing to do.

When I purchased my car after the end of lease I didn't get anything either, but surprisingly I was already listed as the car owner on the vehicle registration card.

The car owner is not listed on the registration card.

Tom

I was referring to a Fahrzeugausweis and yes, it is.

That is the HOLDER, not the OWNER!

Tom

Did the groan make your day better? Relieve yourself more and groan once again. It’s kinda funny

I'm not surprised that you have more than 30,000 posts.

I've been on this forum for a few years now, and I've noticed that you're just waiting to pick on something, not respond with a full sentence to correct something that you assume is wrong (and in that case it indeed was wrong), just to groan, whine and prove you're right.

It is NOT wrong, the grey card does NOT list the owner!

Tom

is it a lease or a loan?

lease: lease company is owner and there is a note 178 on the grey card

loan: car is yours and you can do whatever you want with it

In the US the bank takes a lien on the vehicle. Here they take a lien on you.

Don't groan the messenger

Anyone who thinks that the grey card names the owner should take a closer look at their grey card.

We have four cars, all the grey cards list me as the holder, but they are all owned by my wife.

“Heidipost” is entered as the name of the “Halter” (= holder).

Sounds like she got you by the balls then Tom Cat !!!

so where is the owner denoted then? it would be useful to know that for the 4 motorbikes I have, and two cars, that I'm actually listed as the owner as well as the "holder"

It's not. The only proof of ownership is a bill of sale here.

The "holder" is the person responsible for keeping it legally on the road.

Tom

Thanks everyone.

to clarify (if that's even necessary).

I bought the care at the dealership -- the dealership offered the finances.

for example (just an example) -- I bought a mercedes, mercedes finances provided the loan --- I made all my payments to mercedes.

I don't think this changes your answers - but I thought I should clarify incase I should.

Thanks again.

You can get a confirmation of ownership of the vehicle letter from the Bank. They will confirm that the lease/loan has been paid.
