I have delayed buying wardrobes for literally years, and now I can stall no longer. As its going to be almost floor to ceiling it will need assembly, and I don't want to do it. How much does Ikea charge to assemble a ceiling height, 3m wide wardrobe ? Is it a fixed cost ? Whats the lead time (weeks or months ?)
Much I loathe Ikea, they seem to offer the simple solution unless anyone has any good tips for where to find wardrobes that won't fall apart when I swear at them.
There is also conforama. Similar to IKEA, sort of Swiss IKEA. They deliver and there is a set cost for assembly based on product. Usually about 60:- for delivery including assembly
we bought 2 shelves last years (those kind of display shelf with doors). IKEA charged us at SFr 150 (to build both in one visit). It is acceptable for us....but something pissed us off......they have such a good business that the delivery schedule changed many many times and it's so annoying to keep staying home to wait for them to come. When we complained at their customer service, they admitted the mistake and told us that they got a lot of same kind of complaints...."we have so many orders and we couldn't do much on this. sorry" this is what they replied.
Ikea will charge a few hundred francs to assemble the wardrobe.
If you are looking for the semi-fitted type they are pretty standard sizes (multiples of 50cm in width and 220cm in height) and normally the internal baskets etc fit the wardrobes from the other shops.
Personally I bought ours from Interio because I loathe Ikea, they have quite a clever design which means three screws per wardrobe to assemble them and they are pretty solid.
The take 1 can of beer per meter to fully assemble (you will drink 1 can in the time it takes to assemble 1 meter)
This measurement is only valid to 5m, after which an exponential increase will occur, may end in upside down, back to front and maybe dangerous furniture.
I think it is ridiculous to pay 250 francs for the delivery guys to build it too. I saw them build it once before me, I learnt how they did it and from then on did everything myself. Its fun, really....
On our side, we did the first set ourselves and then gladly paid the 300 CHF for the second time...
It may be that we are clumsy etc but it took us quiet some time even with the electricak srewdriver and frankly I do not think it is possible to do it by yourself, you ned to be 2 people.
I am a complete DIY moron and still managed to assemble the IKEA Leksvik 3 door wardrobe myself in under 3 hours, which I think says more about how easy it is to put together than it does about how capable I am at DIY...
It's worth paying IKEA to assemble them, even if you enjoy that kind of thing yourself (and I do!)
The reason is that the quality of the materials (low density fibreboard) is so bad that unless you are experienced it's quite likely that you will damage them (all it takes is to overtighten one screw and you're ....screwed!) You might be able to bodge the initial installation but if you ever want to take it apart again then you will struggle to reassemble.
The cupboards that a friend of mine had were too large to fit into an estate car so you've probably got to hire a van as well. Furthermore, particularly the glass doors were too heavy to be lifted comfortably by an "average female helper".
Factor in that you will save the hassle of disposing of the plasic and paper packaging as well and the 300CHF begins to sound reasonable.
I either need to see a shrink or an employment lawyer. Building IKEA furniture is an extension of the lego/meccano I spent many a happy hour with as a kid...
Don't assume just because you pay them to assemble it they'll do a good job, these guys bodge it too, it's just that you don't see the damage until much later. The missus got them to assemble some stuff for the babies room as I didn't have time and they made several mistakes.
Do it yourself (with an electric screwdriver and the CORRECT bits) and take your time, only way to ensure a good job.
