Intolerant non-Swiss on 31 July

Absolutely miffed! Whatever happened to tolerance? Last night, there were loads of people setting off their own fireworks but we got told off 2x (different people, different location)! Am so annoyed because last year we did the same and there weren't any problems

It was such a horrible experience since my in-laws are Swiss and they even came over to celebrate but ended up spending the evening arguing with people about fireworks. My father in-law was angry because the people who told us off were NOT EVEN Swiss. He even had to educate one crazy, arrogant german that it is allowed (the german apologized in the end but only after 10min of heated discussion). There were loads of fireworks nearby and it wasn't just us...

So, you're the noisy bugger who kept me awake at 10:01 last night!!!

Maybe a dumb question... but why were you setting off your fireworks last night? 1st Aug. celebrations are this evening

This is Switzerland: it varies from canton to canton.

City fireworks for Basel-Stadt went off at 11pm last night.

"All" the folks with their own fireworks (including my in-laws) were setting them off last night as well... and well into this morning. (Still occasional booms when I went back to bed after seeing hubby off at 430am)

My non swiss OH was mystified too. But that's how it is, we have fireworks, we light them. Who cares, that it's a day to early? There will also be some on the 2. Aug, because some people will have some leftover.

Just get over it.

Were you setting the fireworks properly, i.e. far enough from people, buildings, cars?

He might have been upset he learned that no eggs are delivered on 1 August

Depends. Some communes celebrated last night, some today/tonight. At least 2 days/nights of fireworks around here for sure.

More like it varies commune to commune around here. And if you happen to live near the French border, we also get fireworks here in CH on the French national day.

Last night until the early hours, probably the same tonight. I don't care. People are having fun, and I can get a good view from my bedroom window.

It even varies from town to town.

As long as its a single night of festivities I guess I can cope with fireworks going off until 5 am. However it was a dreadful night with the baby constantly being woken up and the cat pacing the apartment like some nervous wreck. Personally i can sympathise with your neighbour, for the unitiated it's a pretty wearing experience.

Did you set them off outside your own house ? Or in a local park ?

A neighbour departed with her small cute dog to the Schluchsee in Germany in the morning of the 31st and will return on Friday. She told me that hotels in Southern Germany over 1st August are full with Swiss people with dogs

People do tend to leave their common sense at home on 1st August. I've seen people letting fireworks off in crowded places or right next to parked cars. Walking home from seeing an official display is a dice with death when you have to run the gauntlet of every man and his dog letting off rockets fuelled by 6 cans of Feldschlossen.

Personally, I wish they would ban private fireworks or at least restrict them to use on your own land.

5th November in England is just as bad, except that liberal use of fireworks goes on for about 10 days either side.

Agreed. I see people letting their young kids setting them on fire. In Canada, you can't buy them. Only organized and professional ones are allowed.

A quick google of accident from fireworks and alike is enough to think twice about using them.

As long as you're having a blast, forget about the neighbor who exploded about it.

In a few days, any negative vibes will have fizzled out like a poor Frauenfurz.

Be aware, though, that a few of the towns on the German side around the Bodensee also do fireworks on 1 August - little Dorf-fest type of celebrations. In years past we've gone across the border with the noise-phobic mutts only to find ourselves out-of-the-frying-pan-into-the-fire. So, a bit farther into Germany is usually a good idea.

Ditto Alsace - on 1 August every second car seems to have Swiss plates and a Hundebox in the back.

Ja Ja...

No, seriously, as every year there will be accidents with those bloody things, fingers blown off, roofs set on fire.

But quite a lot of people have common sense and know how to behave.

nice pun
