Went walking with our dogs this morning at 8am and thought we would be ok. By the time we got back home an hour later the neighbour's brats had already started letting off firecrackers in the street. The two older dogs didn't seem to care much but the youngest one was paralysed with fear and I had to carry her the last 100m.
I wouldn't mind if it was short, sharp and sweet, but they have been letting them off since 9 am this morning and it is almost midday....
Now, as a good Swiss, I am waiting for the church bells to ring 12. Anyone who sets one off after that and before the bells chime 1...well, they're dead meat
On that basis let's also remove all restrictions on the age for alcohol consumption, age of consent, speed limits in town, side arms, poisons, drugs, TNT, semtext...
If you were being truly rational about it you'd realise that it's common sense that a society to permits certain activities and restricts others. Somewhere you draw the line on what's permissible. You might think that restricting fireworks to licensed and trained groups is a step too far - well, so do I, but it's certainly nothing to do with political correctness, and I wouldn't lose any sleep if it did happen.
Two points occur to me. Why does someone who is NOT EVEN SWISS have less right to complain about noise if they have special reason to eg. a baby ? And why does it have to be so confrontational all the time here? Why does it always have to be an argument and the other party have to be " crazy"?
Well if they didn't like last night how are they going to possibly cope tonight!
Surprised on the dog comments of mass exodus! Lucky my hunde doesn't even budge to fireworks or thunder. But he will bark at the noisy drunks staggering along Seestrasse singing and shouting.
on the bright side, August 1 is the one time during the year that we gingos can actually behave like gringos. we take the opportunity to open all the windows, jam the tune-age at max decibels, drink out on the terrace and let the kids run around screaming like banshees. hard for the neighbors to complain when there are mortars going off and burning towers of straw all around us.
Firework noise is allowed - but round here everything else is still verboten .
If the firecracker-phobic dogs dare to bark, as soon as the neighbor finishes firing his howitzer and puts down his Feldschlosschen he calls the police to complain.
I undertand the disturbance if it is going on all night.
I live in an area with sensible neighbours who look for open fields away from apratments to play with their fireworks. In anticipation, the farmers spent the past week "dressing" their fields with manure. Quite a deterrent.
I closed my window because of the mixture of cordite and manure was starting to close up my sinuses.
It doesn't say fireworks are restricted only on 01 August in this article. It only says police warns the public to be careful because accidents happen in handling fireworks on 01 Aug and the DAYS before.....
I'm all for not wrapping kids up in cotton wool but the point is that you can't take account of people acting dangerously and irresponsibly in a public place, over whom you have no control.
In fact, people acting dangerously and irresponsibly with any other hazardous item (a gun, knife, or aggressive dog, for example) are normally dealt with swiftly and there is a heavy penalty. Fireworks, however, seem to have fallen through the cracks.
There are plenty of people who use fireworks sensibly but there is a significant element of knobheads who think it is fun to let them off in a crowded place, which is nothing to do with cotton-wool wrapping of your nearest and dearest, just pure stupidity and lack of common-sense on their part.
That's the point: If the German was telling the Swiss off for not looking at the date correctly, first the guy is right and secondly the guy sounds very well integrated to me. He scores in both leagues. I understand that this can be too much to take for locals...
One argument can convince me to lynch the guy: if it was after midnight.
Well, around here towns and individuals started with the fire works last weekend, and I expect them to go though this weekend, they, like carnevale, are NOT limited to a single day (or, in the case of carnevale, a single week)!
It is commonly accepted today that Zürich and its surroundings kind of sort of belong to the Germans... as such, you should change your title to Intolerant Swiss on 31 July as it is not a national holiday in Germany.
