Is it really forbidden to use the washing machine on Sundays?

Hello.

My neighbourg just told me that I musst swich off the washing machine inmediatly. She was reeeeally unpolite.

She told me to read the contract roules, but they only said(i think so) no to make noise from 22:00 to 7:00. Nothing about Sundays...

Is normal those kainds of problems in Zurich?

Thanks¿¿

Yes it is true you can not wash on a sunday.

Is it in your own apartment? Or is it a shared washing machine?

Where is this washing machine located..? Is it shared among all the tenants..? Normally there's house rules that dictates the hours and days a person is allowed to use the washing machines. My last place had a central laundry room which we were allowed to use 24/7. My present place is owner occupied and we have our machines in the basement, there are no house rules and we do as we please

really depends on where the washing machine is - if it's in the cellar, nobody hears it and the house rules don't prohibit it, you can probably use it.

Yes this is true in general and includes the use of vacuum cleaners , drills etc. However , some neighbours are pretty ok with it if you don't make noise every weekend .... Ours don't mind so much since they are pretty friendly etc. Been here for 3years and a bit with no problems ...

You was very lucky here we are not allowed to wash, hoover, or do any kind of work on a sunday they say it is a day of reat so you also have to be quiet , one of our neighbours even got a complaint because her children where too loud on a sunday

OMG, we've probably got a police file by now then!

Which reminds me..

I have to run down stairs now to take the laundry out of the washer to put in the dryer..!

I do all my laundry on Sundays because electricity is 60% cheaper..!!

I'm quite lucky to now live in a place where there is no laundry schedule, and even Sundays are fair game so far as laundry is concerned, but often this is not the case. In our previous apartment block, the management went so far as to cut the electrical supply to the laundry room between 9pm and 7 am, and on Sundays and statutory holidays as well.

Often in Switzerland doing laundry on Sunday is simply not tolerated, and it seems you're a bit unlucky so far as your neighbours are concerned in that they're a bit 'old school'.

I'm sorry to tell that that I don't think there's much that you can do. It has been the tradition in this country for ages and eons that Sunday is a day of absolute rest and quiet, and if your neighbours won't let you get away with doing laundry, you'll have to resign yourself to doing it at another time, or moving.

Bummer.

If i really need to do a wash on a sunday then i put a note saying why i am washing nobody complains then.

Yup , same here .... In our case , the neighbours kids are pretty noisy themselves .... We only generate noise while on the PS3 and while watching football ( ahh, actually that would be the missus .... )

Thanks for the replies¡

The fact is that the wooman was realy unpolite :-S

HEre, the washingmachine is in a shared room in the middle of the building. From 22:00 to 7:00 they swith off the power, but no on Sundays. So this can confirm what I said. That, as far as I can understand german, the rules don't sais nothing about no washing on Sundays...

Maybe I should contact the inmobiliary office that rented the apartment...

Excellent idea, and hopefully you can wash on Sundays but be sure to get it in writing if you allowed to. That way you have something to stick in your neighbors face if she comes around bothering you again.

Good luck , although I would be really surprised if you got anything formal here ..... Unfortunate that your neighbour is a tool , or else you could just work it out with all the residents .

.........................

You sound like you have done this before

Actually I do not think it needs to be in the rules. It falls in the category of no work on Sundays, same as no hovering, mowing the lawn and so on...

One of my neighbours had the police around a few weeks ago because he was mowing the law after 5.00pm on Saturday! It seems it was causing a problem for someone two streets over who was having a BBQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have heard of the police over for parties after 12 but this one is definitely a new one for me ....

Get a translation of your house rules. Then you'll know what you can work with.

A lot of them are pretty standard. Lotsa students will do it cheaply. Just make a small ad in kleinanzeigen.ch or another portal.
